[Cypher System] Monte Cook games enters the demi god rp arena with "Gods of the Fall"

Nexus

Seems like Scion or Exalted set in a post apocalyptic world called Afterworld where the heavens physically crashed into the mortal world and killed all the old gods and many mortals. The player characters have awakened to a divine spark in them and try to become the world's new gods. It features 4 new character types: Champion, Shaper, Destroyer and Savior.

Anyone taken a look at it yet?

One Horse Town

Downloaded it the other day as it looked interesting, then noticed i'd have to buy the Cypher system too. Pass.

God games are the new black.

I was underwhelmed by both Numenera and The Strange, in that both feature settings with great, classic premises (post-apocalyptic science fantasy and dimension-hopping) but deliver underwhelming content. I don't think Monte is a bad designer or worldbuilder, but for both premises I have better games serving that niche; I've rambled on Numenera at length elsewhere, here and here.

So, much as I wish Monte success with this one, I'm really invested in Godbound right now.

I've ignored three editions, I'm pretty confident I can ignore a fourth. ;)

I'm also curious about this game, being a Numenera enthusiast (I'm less interested in the Strange even if it has nice products out there). I'm must confess that I actually do not remember a quater of the setting of Numenera as etablished in the corebook and the world book because I could care less about it. It is the illos that defined the setting for me and my appreciation of the old Sega JRPF video games Phantasy Star (the 4 before the on line ones).

Not literally i my case, but AC has the book and we made a character over the phone while I was at work.

Curious about the setting, and about how they handled the power disparity between mortals and gods within Cypher.

They are using a mix of domain powers (which remind me a LOT of Godbound divine powers you gain via levels) and power shifts which are free 'supers' like boost on specific actions. Like inhuman strength is easy to get by putting 2-3 power shifts into it. Or speed, or unique powers, etc. The power shifts allow for more focused but above human level stuff to be done. So normally impossible actions like difficulity 30 etc stuff. Or things outside of human baseline character math. And since they are 'free' they don't count against your effort limits.

Most mortals don't have that range of difficulty or raw power. At first tier isn't not as noticeable, but as the PC's tier up and layer on the domain powers, it gets noticeable VERY fast. They start doing things with out rolling like...Picking up a fully armored horse/rider and using it as a club, running at speeds rivaling race cars overland, casting maxed power powers with no actual 'cost' to them, doing crazy 'do me a favor' rolls on NPCs that can casually beat almost any normal range of difficulty.

Domain powers are stuff like commanding seraphs (mechano angels) around for free, being immortal, hearing your name spoken, locked in loyal minions.

I'd say they are not QUITE as powerful as Godbound PCs, but serious demigod material. The game lacks the domain mechanic of Godbound but trades in their domain/control quest mechanic instead. A slower power curve over all.
