This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Hello!

Found this guy John M Stater when I was looking for some white box stuff.

Has anyone played any of his games are they any good?

He's got a few titles that sound pretty cool:
Black Death
Swords & Sandals
Deviant Decade
Barbarians & Basilisks

Let me know if they are worth a purchase.

Don't know about those, but I liked his Mystery Men! rpg (supers, based off Swords & Wizardry).

I haven't tried his lite games; I really only looked into Blood & Treasure, which attempts to build a bridge between 3.0/d20 and B/X. It's a simple game (like S&W Core) with tons of stuff (spells, monsters, classes, magic items).

Stater's hex crawls are some of the best. He does good adventures and is an old timer in the OSR, having been there for quite some time.

Thanks for the replies. I do like S&W!

I'll definitely pick up a few bits then.

Blood & Treasure looks cool. I could always do with another fantasy game.

Mystery Men, I'll pick that one up too.

I've heard only good things about his books on YouTube.

I liked his more original stuff, but most of it is just one of the many 1000s of slightly house ruled S&W, which IMHO is the nadir of the OSR

Have you looked at his free stuff?

Mystery Men, Pars Fortuna Basic, and 2 issues of NOD will give you some idea of his style.

Can't say I ever heard of him.

Stater's been called the hardest working man in the OSR, because he's a self-publishing machine. Primarily known for his long-running blog, his magazine NOD (which is up to 35(!) thick issues), and an assortment of RPGs. The most notable of the RPGs is Blood & Treasure, which took all the content in the 3.5 SRD and turned it into an old school game based on B/X. He writes a lot of hexcrawls and reskinned or variant classes, and is a fan of old comics. Never really been part of the OSR theorizing or any of the drama; he just does his own thing. Goodman commissioned him to do the Hex Crawl Chronicles series, but that's a pretty minor in comparison.
