This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

When D20 Modern came out, each time we played it, it was like a movie.  It had a definant beginning, middle, and end.  Some of those sessions and characters have had sequels, but most were done after the end of the mini-campaign.  The group really liked it, so whenever we do get the chance to play, it's with this format in mind.  I've just gotten to the point of missing the long-term, open-ended campaigns.

I've done both.  My most recent campaign (Buffy) was set at one 'season' (13 sessions), with the possibility of a follow-up season left open.  My Traveller campaign had a definate ending in mind, but was pretty open-ended otherwise, running for over two years.  My DC Heroes campaign was planned as a closed-ended campaign, with 22 sessions planned.  My Timelords campaign was open ended, although there was always a 'final scenario' planned (never really used, due to the break-up of the group over real-life stuff).

My hopefully-forthcoming Castles & Crusades campaign will be completely open ended and episodic, ending whenever the players want it to end.
