Cliche, but fun..

In a bit of clichéd fun I threw in a crashed spaceship into my fantasy game (inspired by finding one while playing Fallout 3 and having a laugh at it).

In my utter surprise, the funnest and funniest bit of roleplaying I have had in ages came out of the humble sliding door (ala Star Trek door).

The players couldn't find a handle or a latch. The tried pushing it and pulling it, lifting it and pushing it down, but to no avail. For some reason they never thought to slide it to the left by hand. The tank, annoyed by the slow progress, proceeded to try and bash it down. Of course this gave the door a great big bulge but didn't break it, and just made it impossible to push anymore. In the end, some ingenious destructive spell work got them through.

I am sure others have used this sort of modern in a fantasy world cliché before, if you have some that have worked well (or even not so well) please share! Because the last session finished just entering in the large ship and I could use many more fun things to do!!

Well, if the ship is still powered ...
Open flames, such as torches, are likely to trigger the fire suppression system.
Artificial gravity PLUS normal gravity would make heavy armor much heavier.
Lifts will be a real challange, if a simple door was.

Did the PLAYERS know it was a spaceship? Or were you tricky in how you were describing it, so that they wouldn't realize?

Because if they did know, but portrayed their PCs in that way, that's pretty brilliant RP on their part.

I have Chaositech, by Monte Cook, and I've thinking for a long time that ancient space technology corrupted by demons could be a great plot for a classic D&D setting.

The location wasn't described as a spaceship, I figured that would be the best way to get some interesting gaming at least on the way in.

One player has figured out it is a spaceship (received a note) but she is brilliantly RP'ing a fantasy level of knowledge during the exploration. I am dead impressed by it.

Another player is convinced it is a living metal creature or construct they are in. I had pulsing lights on the walls (emergency lighting) and deep thrumming heart beat like sounds (a failing engine powering down slowly). He is also RP'ing the situation well.

The other two players are just going along for the ride, which is typical for those two players.

I have no doubt that they will figure it out before too long but I am going to continue describing things in a non-spaceshipy way for now.

Sounds awesome Jong, I might just go and see if I can get a copy of it now. So far I had been thinking about throwing in a laser rifle of sorts and have it basically operate like a wand of lightning/fire bolts.

I have a nugget of an idea that it would be cool to have a player activate it by holding it over their head, while pointing it at their target and saying "By the Power of , I smite thee!"

Any other ideas though are going to be fun though.

Cool. I love the idea of the fire suppression trigger being a trap triggered by any fire spell in the ship. Since we are playing D&D you could Ref save getting blinded for a short period of time and through in maybe a nauseous effect as well.

That is definitely going into the list!

Idinsinuation

What are the odds of a "disintegration machine" that teleports them outside the ship for a fun cliche appropriate joke.  One player stands on a pedastal and the other works the odd control panel.  Provided they're the type to fiddle with things.

Another interesting idea.. disintegration machine that has a planet wide teleportation range. Not to mention if the screw up their usage check all the participant feels is a lot of pain and being torn apart slowly. Noice, I like it as a trap/puzzle concept.

The classic version of this is of course Blackmoor.

Not sure if I've told this one here or not:
In the spaceship in Expedition to the Barrier Peaks many years ago the players found a strange carnivorous plant.  I figured they would hack it and keep exploring, having spent several sessions in there.  But the party druid thought it might be the last of its kind and wanted to preserve it.  The warrior ended up fighting with him while the rest of the group stood around, not sure what to do.  Unfortunately for the warrior, the druid had been keeping all the tech items that they found and figured out how to work a couple of them.  Warrior got zapped (he was eventually resurrected) and they all decided to go home.
