This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). I've seen it. I'm on the fence. Honestly not impressed as it was hyped more than I think it deserves.
Why do you like it?

I regretted my purchase, but that is due to the owner's attack on Venger.  So some bias coming from me.  As a system it works just fine.

I use a version of it with new/younger players, but I flip it from roll under to STAT+d20 vs. TN (DC). It's very easy to improvise encounters, a boon if you are a low prep GM. I don't care for the usage mechanic, so I don't use it. Ditto with the death rolls table (I modified it to a d8, with two more chances to perish). The monsters convert easily to Dungeon World, so I obtained the monster books, just for that. Not much progression crunch. Your stats improve, you gain spells. That's about it. I think its main use is for short term campaigns, or to run at cons. It's cheap, which is good. 2nd ed. added a more interesting (and balanced) fighter mechanic. Casters get spells at level, so, welcome to fireballs at level 3. Sleep spell is way overpowered (4d6 lvls put to sleep, with no cap on what levels are affected, so you can put a couple of giants down with it, with a good roll). Uses ad/disad, class dmg dice (2 ratings--armed and improvised). Has some additional race-class books. Several genre hacks, including a CoC knock off, with smokes as an integral device.

Summary: good introductory, or one shot system. 2e has some cool tables. Can run old modules with it, if desired. Solid B.

1) It is a good lightweight system if you need one. It is about as good as the others (The White Hack, Knave, etc.)
2) It is not quite as D&D as it looks at first glance. The game dynamic is subtly different in multiple aspects, and the resulting experience is rather removed from the baseline.
3) The second edition comes with a lot of in-box support material that's helpful in GMing, and well presented in a concise, accessible manner.
4) There is an active, supportive community.
5) That said, it is ultimately mostly flavourless (unlike, say, Into the ODD), and the 2e artwork is grating.
6) The author is a rabid SJW of the "deplatform U" kind.

Ahem.

(Though, perhaps that goes without saying...)

I had been wanting to try The Black Hack, but I have yet to purchase it.  I did buy the print version of Heroes & Monsters over on Lulu.com.  Heroes & Monsters is pretty much a near clone of The Black Hack, with the addition of a Dwarf class, an Elf class, and a Halfling class.  So its The Black Hack meets Basic D&D.  I was wanting to run classic D&D B/X modules using The Black Hack, but now I'll most likely just use H&M to run a Black Hackish game at some point. Heroes & Monsters was easier to acquire for me via Lulu, and less expensive (and the PDF version is also quite cheap over on DriveThruRPG).
