This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Someone in my gaming group asked me a question, regarding my recent review of Kaigaku:

If players roll their Str/Dex to attack, and roll their Dex to defend, what the fuck happens when two players are fighting each other?!

Does the attacker only roll his roll to attack? Does the defender roll to defend? How the fuck is it handled?

Your overthinking it. It would be straight up attack rolls for both characters. The defense roll is used in dealing with NPCs.

I'm assuming that's not some kind of official statement or ruling, but your own perspective?

Don't you see there's a problem with that (which underlies the problem of the whole "player-facing" concept)? It means that when you're fighting another PC, your own abilities have NO BEARING WHATSOEVER on whether or not you're hit.

I think the author suggested each one rolling defense, so at least you are in charge of whether you get hit.  The problem is Rogues who attack with advantage from surprise that would have to be converted into disadvantage for defense I guess.

Whether you rolled with both roll Attack or both roll Defend, the author said remember to use the Superior Opponent bonus, so the person who was lower level got a penalty.

If I was going to do it, I'd probably have both roll Defense, unless there was a PvP Sneak Attack, then the Thief would roll Attack like normal.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Quote from: Justin Alexander;974253Most player-facing systems I've seen include a simple rule for handling opposed checks when they come up: Usually both sides roll the appropriate test and the highest margin of success wins.

The Black Hack apparently doesn't.

Sure, but it is an easy and obvious ruling to anyone that isn't being deliberately obtuse.

Well, yes and no. It still feels very anti-emulative.

I'm curious what you mean by that word. It doesn't appear to be the dictionary definition and your usage in essays seems to be all over the place.

It means effectively creating a virtual world that fits certain parameters; the parameters will vary from one game to another, but the point is always that within those, it feels like a living world. This allows Immersion to happen.
