This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Scion of Amber

Now I wasn't sure where to put this thread.  I opted for RPG discussion because the official Amber forum seems dedicated to the diceless rpg.

But given that WW's latest will have rules allowing you to create/use your own Pantheon, how about a Scion of Benedict vs the titans of Chaos.  Or would the use of a storyteller engine remove from the player held absolutes enjoyed by Amber.  I know it would make it easier to introduce new players into an existing game.

(If this thread needs to be moved, just do it)

In fact, I've been wondering where I could or should put a thread about doing Amber with a different system, too.

I'm not at all familiar with the new WW stuff (nor do I really care to be), but your basic concept seems sound to me.

I've been thinking about running an Amber game using the Classic Unisystem rules because I really think the Armageddon rules for "Incarnates" (ie gods) would work quite well for it, but I'm so busy working on 4 other projects that I just don't have time to do it right now.

Heh, you and me both.  I've got my dresden file game ongoing, working on a Victorian science fantasy, trying to work out when and where I could fit a night of boardgames into the week and now WW are about to release Scion which is getting my juices flowing as well - which frankly I think is a little unfair of them seeing as I've already had 3 abortive attempts at running games about gods and demigods in the modern world and its an itch I haven't scratched yet.

To answer the basic question: you can put a thread about Amber on either subforum, either this one or the Amber/Wujcik forum, as you see fit.  The fact that Amber has got (just about) its own particular forum, doesn't mean that all Amber threads have to go there. In particular, if the thread is about the Amber setting but not the actual Amber RPG, you can definitely put it in either location, and depending on the particulars of the thread this forum might even be more appropriate (since technically the theme of that other forum is actually Erick Wujcik's games... so unless you're talking about running Amber with TMNT, putting it on the main forum might even be the better choice, but if you choose to put it in the other forum, I wouldn't move it out of there either).

I know it's been a while since this thread was last used, but I've been mulling over this same idea - creating an Amber Pantheon within the Scion system, and stumbled across this.

Now that the Scion system is 5 books deep, has anyone put any more thought into Scion: Amber?

KrakaJak

I'm sure it's possible. I hear there's plenty of people out there already doing it. My google Fu is too weak to find it. I remember some threads about it on rpg.net back when Demigod came out.

My personal opinion is that an Amber based Pantheon wouldn't work well, but you could easily use the Scion rules to run an Amber like game. At high levels, Scion essentially becomes mostly diceless anyway. The people with a higher epic level in a trait will always beat you at that trait.

Really, just throw in rules for Shadow manipulation, and make a set of trumps a 5 dot artifact and away you go.

Not really knowing much about the Scion game, I'm curious: Why do you say that "an Amber-based Pantheon wouldn't work well"?

An Amber Pantheon would be no less wierd than the American Pantheon in Companion.

No, an Amber based Pantheon would be brilliant.  The change to it would be that you need to have "the kids"/ scions away from Amber... much the same way you have scions on Earth away from the God Realm. (Trumps and Patterns would be Pantheon powers.)  Amber and Chaos influenced things would be on the Earth Realm.  You would then gain in power (move to or just about to move to demi-god), and then the multiverse would open up.  You would be able to move towards Amber, just like Demi-Gods can move to the God Realms.

The Scions of Ambers would be a lot less dimensional than they would be in ADRPG, as they would be "smaller version" of their parents. So if you want to be the Artistic Son of Benedict, your scion abilities would be contrary to your focus.  In fact, you wouldn't have a lot of variation (power wise) from any of your sibs.

The metaphor is there and some of the mechanism as well.  You would have to do a lot of messing around with domained powers.  Fatebinding would need to be toned down, but remember things associated with an Amberite become more real/ powerful.. thus the effect is there.

To be closer to Amber books, there would be a bit of messing about.  The more abstract you make the Elders (to the character's lives) the less you would have to change.

Okay, maybe not as brilliant as I first thought, but if you want to muck about with it, you could have a good game experience.

I think one of the key tenets to Amber is the fact that everything is a shadow of the city of Amber. The whole idea of the shadows and shadow manipulation would severely undermines any reality/existence of anything else but the Amberites in any setting they would be a part of. In the world of Amber, only the Amberites are important.

It would take some severe retrofitting to bring them in line with the other pantheons of the setting. You'd have to drop the shadow idea altogether. The trumps could stay. You'd have to make Amber a static secret city equivalent to Olympus or Atlantis. It would be fun to run the characters of Corwin, Random and Bleys et. all but losing the shadow means you lose one of the core concepts that make the Amberites special.

Well... You could simply dismiss the idea of other gods from your campaign setting: as I understand it, the optional material in that Ragnarok supplement already does the same by having everything revolve around the Aesir. Instead, make the Amberites and the Courts of Chaos the only true pantheons in existence.
