This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

SPLINTER: scifi/fantasy VR bloodsport

Does anyone have any thoughts on SPLINTER? I have the core rules but haven't had much of a chance to delve into them yet. So far, it looks very, very cool. Essentially, it seems to be about a far-future dystopia in which combatants enter a super-advanced virtual reality fantasy/sci-fi universe and take over natives to the setting -- their Avatars -- to win fortune and glory.

Hi Dan! I'm one of the creators of the game, so if you or anyone else has any questions, I'm here to answer!

I'm obviously biased but I think it's an awesome game and universe. The coolest thing to look out for is the Color Commentary mechanic, where players get bonuses to attacks and actions for good roleplaying.

If you're interested, we also just launched a kickstarter for some supplements for the game here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/endtransmissiongames/splinter-surprising-things

I tried Morphius and Dream Park; the deal of playing a character in a game who's playing a character in a game turned out to be a level too removed for me.
And we are here as on a darkling plain  ~ Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, ~ Where ignorant armies clash by night.

I feel the same about Hong Kong Action Theater as well.

Hmm... Fair point. Based upon a recent conversation I had, it seems that the beings you play within the simulation are actually independent beings for whom the "real world" player must compete for control. Would have make a difference to you?

I liked the concept of playing a rising star (and that affecting what kinds of abilities you get in roles) but it was a tough sell for players. One of the great things about HKAT is you could easily strip that premise out and just use the combat system.

Welcome to the TheRPGsite. I am curious what sort of generation system the game uses for the infinite dungeon.

Hi, and thank you!

We have a ton of random generation tables already in the core book, using d100s mostly. Since the SPLINTER is always shifting around, you can be in a room that looks like a medieval dungeon and move into a room that looks like a high school cafeteria, because sometimes rooms change places (or are changed by characters).

We're hoping to fund our latest kickstarter because it's going to have more tables like this, and also tables that will let people make their own gear and creatures. Even if folks are less interested in the core game, the books on their own are a good resource for room, treasure, and monster ideas :).

I'm in the same boat as Dan, in that I've read over SPLINTER a lot, but never gotten dice out and given it a shot.

In other news, hiya Mik!
Ugh. Gross. I resent and am embarrassed by the time I spent thinking this site was okay.

Hallo! Just wanted to pop back in and see if anyone else has any questions about the game. Right now the kickstarter is almost 2k in, with most of the month to go. So if anyone has any questions about SPLINTER and how it works, let me know!

You could, or you could just buy Feng Shui.

The Magic supplement was decent though.
