This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

RPG Genres, Why Are Fantasy RPGs So Popular?

Fatbeards don't leave their basements much. They're socially infertile already, giving them the chop would be redundant.

Quote from: Kyle Aaron;285860. . . [P]eople have this strange idea that because you fired a rifle a few times you must know heaps about them all, and nobody wants to start the discussion in your presence.
Rather like the strange mania of a governor claiming expertise in foreign policy 'cause the governor's home state is on the border.
On weird fantasy: "The Otus/Elmore rule: When adding something new to the campaign, try and imagine how Erol Otus would depict it. If you can, that\'s far enough...it\'s a good idea. If you can picture a Larry Elmore version...it\'s far too mundane and boring, excise immediately." - Kellri, K&K Alehouse

:D
Perhaps you're on to something here.

The fantasy genre, by including melee, magic and missile weapons allows for a greater variety of weaponry than future (Guns!) modern (Guns!) post apocalyptic (Guns and Crossbows!).

When the majority of play focuses on dispatching foes, having a greater variety in which to do so would definitely be a selling point.

I'm fat.

I have a beard.

I've also been married for 21 years and got laid last night.  You?

Yeah, I would say, back off on the fatbeard hate. Some of my best friends are fat and/or have beards.

I think we need to make clear that while "Fatbeard" is a viable cliche/insult not all males that are fat and sport beards are, in fact, Fatbeards.

Also, you might be lean, trim and clean-shaven and BE a Fatbeard.

Well, except that vomitbrown didn't use the term "fatbeard" -- but rather insulted "fat, bearded geeks".

Bigots always have an excuse for why their particular brand of bigotry is A-okay.

We could flush all the smelly, ill behaved tools out of gaming (well really we couldn't) and gaming would still never be "cool". Ever.

There are only two things I can't stand. Racial intolerance and the Dutch.

I don't generally care for the term "fatbeard" either. I like "Social Retard" much better. Especially since in my personal experiences people's body-weight has rarely had much of anything to do with their level of social retardation.

That's my position either. I've met many fat bearded guys who were absolutely civil, polite, and who gave a really good image of the hobby.

Lawncrapper was not a bad word, Pundit. It has more punch.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

RPGPundit

Oh I agree.
However, the term Lawncrapper is really meant to refer to someone who isn't even very honestly interested in the hobby but is here because he is looking for "acceptance" and this is a hobby that has unfortunately said that just about any variety of social retard, and deviant with regard to hygiene, social conventions, behaviour, and nowadays thanks to the storygamers sexual degeneracy can gleefully join up.

Whereas I think that when people talk about "fatbeards" they're talking about a very specific kind of socially retarded geek, the one made famous by the Comic-Store-guy on the Simpsons; the loser who is nevertheless incredibly arrogant about how much he knows about utterly useless life-wasting trivia, and hasn't actually accomplished anything else of meaning ("but Aquaman, you can't marry a woman without gills...oh I've wasted my life!").

So the "fatbeard" they're thinking about there is a kind of social retard, but I think a bit different from the Lawncrapper. I'm not sure what would be a better term for him, though; I am certainly not arguing that "fatbeards" don't exist, I've seen them countless times, its just that a lot of the times they've been neither fat nor bearded, and I've met gamers who are fat or bearded or both who have NOT wasted their lives nor show the kind of behaviours we think of with the "fatbeard" term.
