Since we're all about talking about our games and since this site did help provide a system for my current The Day of Living Dangerously (OtE) campaign, I need a system for this setting (Think The Road Warrior meets The Seven Samurai)

The unnamed country in this post ecopocalypse setting is divided into various districts, each governed by a single strongman (woman). Carrying out the law for this ruler is a group of elite marshals called RoadWardens. They travel around the district settling disputes and maintaining law & order...think of the cops form the Hall of justice in Mad Max 1. They live a monastic lifestyle and follow a strict code of conduct -Honour.

Part of the backstory is that the combat/investigative skills of these Wardens are based on the tactics used by Navy Seals, the Mossad and various other elite units. When the world went apeshit, these skills over time ...like arcane lore...were passed down from master to apprentice until groups of individuals congregated under various Prophets and the districts were formed and The Wardens become the law of the road.

The campaign begins with the dissapearence of the pcs "strongman". The RoadWardens have to decide if they want to continue being marshals - enforcing the law, helping folks out in their current district or leave and join another retinue in another distirct.

For the car battle episodes I'm using Car Wars, but for everything else...I still have not decided.

Just off the top of my head, the systems I'd probably use for this game would be one of the following:

Savage Worlds
Fuzion
Wushu

The other game that sprang to mind is octaNe, though to be honest I have no idea how that system works - it just bills itself as an over-the-top "Mad Max"-type game.

RockViper

This sounds like Steel Dawn.

Terry Pratchett (Men at Arms)

What systems are you leaning towards, David?
The past lives on in your front room
The poor still weak the rich still rule
History lives in the books at home
The books at home

Gang of Four

I was thinking of BESM only because it is one of the few "rules medium" system I'm familiar with. MysteryCycle mentioned Savage Worlds and RockViper Steel Dawn , two games I've heard about but know really nothin' about.

I'm running this game for a couple of friends  who will be down for the next couple of months (they will be joining my regular crew), so I think there will only be about at the most 7 sessions. I need a system which handles action well but nothing too crunchy. There really doesn't need to be any vehicles rules simply because I'm using Car Wars for the auto duels.

Minimal gun rules...there will be guns, but mostly it's the kind of weaponary in the first two Mad Max films... a lot of knife fights I think.

David R.,
Before GURPS existed I ran CAR WARS as a role playing game.  It was tricky at times...but it was also sort of like using classic TRAVELLER rules.  I just had to add a few more skills than DRIVER, GUNNER, etc.

My First GURPS game ? - It Was an GURPS:AUTODUEL adventure.  This was back in the 1980s.

SAVAGE WORLDS might work for what you are thinking of. GURPS would, if you were used to it.

I don't suppose you have the conversion notes for your CW rpg around somewhere?

Time is running out, late one night I found myself trying to find (online) an old post-apoc gamebook - the FF kind - to use it's system :D

Savage Worlds, in addition to being a superfast rules light-to-medium system, has vehicle rules very, very much like Car Wars. I also think it would be a good option for you.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

Savage Worlds. Links please...maybe some online stuff I could browse through before buying the game.

Hope this isn't coming too late for you:

Great White Games' Website (scroll down to Downloads and you'll find a free "Test Drive" PDF of the game system you can try out.)

Savage Heroes - Conversions.  One of the stated goals of Savage Worlds was to create a game system that would be very easy for people to 'port other game settings over to.  This website has a HUGE list of conversion guidelines and house rules that other people have come up with.  The house rules that I would recommend here are "Burning Rubber" (covering car chases) and "Scene of the Crime" (more detailed use of the Investigation skill), both by Butch Curry.  It's also got conversion rules for Redline (the d20 "Mad Max"-type supplement) which look as though you could use them even without owning the Redline book.

The nice things about Savage Worlds are:

1. They specifically designed Savage Worlds to be easy to learn and fast to run.  The authors wanted to target people who's only gaming experience was with computer or console-based games, so there are aspects that may feel like a half-way point between computer games and PnP RPGs, and it shouldn't take more than a half-hour to make characters and start playing.

2. It's designed to work well with miniatures; in fact, it can be run solely as a miniatures game if you like.  So, if you ever decide not to use Car Wars, or want to focus on, say, a firefight or something in the parking lot, you can do that using SW rules instead of CW rules if you like.

Thanks Mysterycycle. I think I'll use SW. The game starts next Thursday, so you are right on time :)

David R.,
I DID look around in my old boxes of stuff for those notes. Could not find them. That was at least 20 years ago  that included a house fire and 3 moves in location.  In hindsight I'm lucky I have any of my classic TRAVELLER LBBs after all this time.

I agree in general with the SAVAGE WORLDS suggestion.  In many ways SAVAGE WORLDS has several similiarities to GURPS.  SW is just a little looser and encourages more "seat-of-your-pants" refereeing.

While I also think SW is a fine fit, I'm not seeing how it's similar to GURPS.  Flat rolls, exploding dice, feats, levels, bennies...

Hell, if you put it that way he could run it just using the FREE GURPS Lite 4th/e . Its a FREE pdf  for pity's sake. HeQ, even the 3rd edition might work for what he wants.
