This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Bonus Tables/Bogey Tables
« on: March 02, 2006, 12:24:53 PM »
CZ's thread on starting experienced or at different points had me thinking about Bogey Tables.

Did anyone else grow up on RPGs using Bogey tables?  Roll percentile for an unusual power or background that all characters have?  I did this so much with 1e and 2e that it took a long time to realize it was an idea nicked from another game in fact.

And I still occasionally toy with the idea of creating something like that again, but could never balance it with the CR system, so I never quite got around to it.

Hmm. I think to balance it with the CR system i would integrate the Level Adjustment system into it. pick certain LA+ races and shamelessly steal Ideas from them, and you can use that for about 30-50% of the table. the rest of the table I would fill with LA+0 fluff bits, or minor bits, such as extra gold, or a few extra skill points.

say a breakdown like this:

01-55% would be composed of +0 LA fluff
55-80% would be composed of +1 LA ability sets.
80-95% would be composed of +2 LA ability sets.
96-99% would be composed of +3 LA ability sets.
100% would be something special - roll again twice, or use one +2 and one +0, or something like that.
