This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

GRIM

Quote from: J ArcaneA bad writer thinks he needs no editor.

A good writer knows he does.

There have been occasional historical exceptions to this rule, but you are not one of them.

(You being general, not you in particular JB.  I never got the impression you avoided good editing.)

Self editing is almost impossible. I use a few techniques to get around it as best I can, but I still fail a lot. Part of the problem is that you already have a blind spot to certain things, which is why you leave them in. Also you're writing to your own cadence and, if people haven't heard you speak, it can be difficult for them to see that the structure isn't, necessarily, wrong.

I also think English English and American English are diverging more than we think, which has it's own problems.

You'll see this when YotZ: Havens comes out.  Despite me setting Writer on US English right from the very start and desperately trying to match Tim's voice (particularly in the Diary Entries) it's completely obvious which bits are his and which bits are mine (hint: I'm the pretenious one)

Quote from: JimBobOzProbably the same's true of a writer. A real writer will never cut their writing entirely from a book, and will find it very painful even to trim it down. I had to cut a chapter's worth from d4-d4, I felt like I was shooting Old Yeller.

I had to cut this fantastic monologue from Haven, some of the best writing I've ever done, because I couldn't find a place to put it.  I stuck it on my blog instead

Very odd place to put Spirit Magic. And is this Spirit Spirit Magic or a renamed version of another type of magic?

After buying Conan OGL 1st printing at retail price (which I still kinda like) I'm waiting until the 2nd printing or more likely 2nd edition of MRQ. I may pick up the 2nd Age Glorantha stuff but 1) I've yet to really get into 3rd Age 2) I don't why I should go with 2nd over 3rd Age premise-wise.

For now MRQ SRDs to pick over for nuggets with RQ3 softcover and other BRP bits. I have seen MRQ books at a Half Price Books but they're thinner than WFRP (or have thicker covers? o.O) with seemingly less quality control. Right now I'd rather catch up on WFRP purchases.

That Conan movie commentary track is great. Arnie makes fun of himself and praises the cast & he and Milus make it entertaining with some insight. I finally get the point of the Wheel of Pain and some of Milus' take on the snake cult. Spot on about the editing.

.

I haven't bought Cults Volume 2 yet, but from what I gathered (and know from previous editions...) shamanism/Spirit Magic is distinct, it's own entity.  To be fair I was a little overly harsh on the Dragon Magic, as in theory is it 'unique' being 'mystisism', relying on physical skills like dance or martial arts to do it's 'thing'... but it just doesn't seem different enough to really qualify.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
