This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: S'mon;967374Thanks for your thinking, I see you've put plenty of thought into it! Re the M1, I see now - burst fire from a semi-auto makes sense within the 1 minute combat round paradigm; not sure about it with 6 or 10 second rounds. Trying to remember what it was like firing the SA80 bullpup carbine on semi-auto when I was in the army reserve, I think firing full power rounds you couldn't really 'burst fire' within say a 3 second period because the barrel has to be re-aimed after every shot (unlike with Hollywood-style blank firing where it doesn't kick much).

I run my combat rounds loosely at about 6 seconds per round (1 minute is traditional for Swords & Wizardry, so I left that in there so everyone could house rule their own). My idea with Burst Fire is you are aiming in a general area and firing multiple rounds, increasing the odds of a hit. That's why I give the +2 bonus to the attack roll. I've fired the M1 Garand and the M14 (which kind of feels similar) and you can throw a lot of rounds down range in a short period of time. You're bound to hit the target at least once. :) In all reality, you could fire multiple rounds from a bolt-action rifle in 6 seconds, but since you have to reset each time, you wouldn't get back on target as easily.

Mordred Pendragon

As a fan of military history, I am seriously contemplating purchasing Operation WhiteBox my next payday. Looks like it'd be good.

I am wondering about using Operation WhiteBox for a Korean War game, or alternately use the material as reference and inspiration in making an OSR Vietnam War or Army Men campaign.

The mechanics are fairly traditional so there's no reason why a different era wouldn't work. My friends are on me to run a modern spec ops game but technology changes a lot of the considerations.

I've got a fun little PvP add on that uses respawning green army men that I plan to release once I've released my tactical grid rules set add on that should be fun.

I think it's fine for Korea, Vietnam maybe a slight stretch. I wouldn't use it for modern spec ops without tweaking.

Hi Doc Sammy,

The core rules (WWII: Operation WhiteBox), expansion rules (OWB: Tactical Combat), and all of the support missions and materials are available here:

http://www.rpgnow.com/browse/pub/3356/Small-Niche-Games/subcategory/5676_26684/WWII-Operation-WhiteBox

The PDF is currently priced at $7.99, but RPGNow is getting set to run its Christmas in July sale, so you might want to wait for that to see if it'll come down a buck or two.

Thanks!

Pete
