Title: Best Pungeon ideas?
Post by: Shrieking Banshee on December 27, 2019, 09:13:25 PM
Any ideas for cool thematic gimmick dungeons based around 1 theme preferably with max pun potential?

I had a great time with the Gungeon and the crypt of the necrodancer.

I guess this sort of thing is too goofy for this place? Aight. Didn't think the pundit would be upset over something so trivial.

The Dragon Quest JRPGs are incorrigible in their naming conventions (at least in anything translated after the first US release of VIII) and might be a good source of inspiration.

Grow a funny bone already.....

Giant silvery ants with a high armor class that make music with heavy beats when they move - Adamantium Ants

Large cylindrical treasure chests that have pull tabs on top. When opened, a Brown Pudding strikes out and engulfs the character opening it. - Snack Pack Brown Puddings

Spitballing here:

Hell's Kitchen -- demonically possessed foodstuffs. Final boss Pizza the Hutt?

The Goblin Warrens -- a special secret goblin defense force comprised entirely of goblins named Warren.

Dragon Hoarders -- a hoarder dragon, who not only collects wealth and treasure, but happy meal toys, collectible special-edition cereal boxes, and beanie babies.

So now a cooking-themed pungeon is beginning to form in my head.

You have all sorts of slimes for puddings and Jelos, A Cold-Iron Chef, Hell themed enemies, and other stuff.

Didn't Piers Anthony tap out that mine in Xanth? :p

(Actually, on a serious note, I always wanted to give "Curse of the Necrodancer" a spin. :) )

I once included a "Forest of Thyme" in one of my campaigns, which initially was meant to sound chronologically mysterious but as the name implies simply turned out to be a good place to harvest herbs. Can't remember if I ripped it off from somewhere or not, and isn't particularly clever, but it is what it is.:)

I'm not "upset". It's just not something I'd ever run.

Xanth is a series of novels by Piers Anthony. He relies heavily on puns, such as a butterfly which is a stick of butter with wings. I was going to suggest Xanth, but Opaopajr beat me to it. ;)

Yup, thanks finarvyn! :) I forget how big the series is now, but it's quite a few books. The 'punniness' was a barrier for me to get into them when younger. Maybe my inner 'dad humor' has flowered over the decades? But yeah, I can only imagine what sort of resource that would be for this topic. :D

That's not so much a pun as it is a play on words...

Many decades ago (pre Xanth if you can believe it) I went through a phase of this.  The only ones I remember now are:

Mexican Fire Ents
Grassy Gnolls

Munchkin has a great one:  Net Trolls.  Trolls armed with nets and an irritating attitude.
