J Arcane

I made this with AKS Hexmapper, with a little after effect tweaking in the GIMP, in a couple of hours:

The downside of what I've done with the scaling here though, is that I can't load this version back into AKS, due to the scaling up of the image, and the conversion from BMP.

I think the idea is pretty neat, but what is Elthos?
And how do I get the Invasion:Earth rules inside that applet?

Thanks.  Elthos is my World (setting and rules).  It is also two software applications based on two Elthos Rules systems, ODS (the mini-system) and Prime (the complete rules).  What I'm showing off above is a screenshot of the Elthos Prime application Combat Screen which is displaying a Map that I created with the application's Map Editor.

As for getting Invasion:Earth rules into it... um... well ... er ... uh ... hmmmmm... no.  I don't think it can easily do that.   Sorry.  But it does a lot of Other stuff.   Basically I use it to run my world, but I designed it to allow for multiple worlds, though they would all have the same base rules system.  So it's not really designed to incorporate other rules systems.   I suppose that could be something to look into in the future, though I can only imagine that it would be insane to try to program something that allows users to add entirely Other rules systems into it.   There might also be legal complications.

On the other hand, maybe you're just ribbing me.  :P   I'd believe that.  heh.

Well, I got Hexmapper, it seems really great. Now to confirm, I COULD use maps generated with this program in a commercial product, right?

Now I need a simple dungeon-maker...

Hard to get much simpler than Dungeon Crafter or Dungeon Forge.

There are prettier, but few simpler that I know of.

Alright...if anyone is still paying attention to this thread...is there any good tile/dungeon mappers for a MODERN game?

Again, I'd personally go with something like photoshop or GIMP.

However, you could do nice modern maps with Dundjinni. The secret here, though, is that you'd have to import a lot of new artwork, like different textures for sidewalks, streets etc., and bring in lots of modern furniture and other objects. There are quite a bit of these available for free on the internet, but you'll have to search them out and load them into Dundjinni.

I'm fairly certain that you can add things into CC3 to do the same.

In general, there isn't as much love out there for making modern maps.

Depending on the detail that you "need", there is Dungeon Crafter.
I have created a handful for my gaming and have the JPGs for them posted on
my page.
(I'm open to suggestions for more.)

Pavement, metal and concrete are standard tile sets already available.

Yeah I'm doing Star Wars SE maps with it. A lot of the stuff you'd have to download is free through their forums. (I check in there once a week to get more stuff, for free.)

For battle maps I go to the DunDjinni forums and grab the free stuff as well and then I use Powerpoint.

here is a Pulp action firefight. a couple of heroes are trying to break into the armored cars. suddenly the badguys show up.

Unless you have artistic talent, you can easily get caught up trying to find/draw just the right graghic for a detailed map.

Personally, I'd rather have a "rough sketch" style map and describe the detail, instead of using high detail maps.

There are beautiful maps around but, making them match a specific story can be a challange.

Thanks to everyone with their help and advice on this. Obviously, I'm considering including some maps in my long-term plan to create an FtA! sourcebook (the Forward... to Adventure! Gamemaster's Notebook!; or "FtA!GN!").

I think Campaign Cartographer gives, hands down, the best results.  However, it is takes a fair bit of effort to get good at it.  Once you get good at it, though, there is not much you cannot do to edit and manipulate the image you've made.

Here is the map I'm working on now:

http://straszheim.50megs.com/world.PNG.

I'd say it is about 30% complete and has taken about 4 hours so far.  The most difficult step will be coming up with cool names for things.
