Avatar Legends on kickstarter

So, I'm an Avatar the Last Airbender fan. I remember watching the series when it came on Nickelodeon. I hated Legend of Korra (virtue signalling). So I hear there is going to be a table top rpg. I'm leery, cause for the most part I don't play in licensed settings, but I'm like maybe I'll pick it up.

I see it went live recently and has made a pile of money so far. But man I'm turned off to some companies who use kickstarter. I'm not anti kickstarter but for the most part I think it's . . . not misused but I don't like the way a lot of companies use it.

I'm not gonna dwell on what I don't like about kickstarter. But specifically about the Avatar RPG. Number 1 it uses PbtA. I'm not going to run PbtA. I don't like it. I know some do, but not me. But here's the real thing, I noticed one of the contributing authors is one certain Mr. Daniel Kwan. That's right kids, the same Daniel Kwan who's fee fees are hurt by Oriental Adventures. The same Daniel Kwan who translated that into writing one of the Candlekeep Mysteries adventures.

I don't like the dude and never will, but I've got to hand it to him to translate his loud mouthness into a sort of success, I guess.

LOK was a big sloppy shit on Avatar. It being included in the mixture means the product will be garbage.

That's what took me from planning on being a day-one backer to passing on this one.  Sure, now that they're over $3.2M, they'll never miss me.  But his name has kept me off two Kickstarter projects now.

I'm glad you pointed out that Kwan was working on this. I looked at the contributors and noticed the list also included James Mendez Hodes, the original "orcs are black people" fucktard. I was backing at the $75 level, but those 2 names were enough to get me to cancel. It won't matter with the giant pile of cash they'll be making, but at least I can say I didn't contribute to the problem. Now I wish I hadn't backed Urban Shadows 2e....
Klytus, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today?

An obscure body in the S-K System, Your Majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet... "Earth".

If it wasn't woke, it would JUST be shit. The wokeness is more the cherry on the pile of shit writing.

Danny Whinybitch Kwan and Jimmy the Retard Hodes are both on the Airbender RPG? Wow, guess I keep more money in my pocket!

Thank you for the heads up.

I didn't mind Legend of Korra until it went total woketard, but overall the show was much weaker than Last Airbender. I had been interested in the roleplaying possibilities of the non-show eras that they promised.

What will be interesting is whether we see this RPG at convention tables or whether it winds up as yet another big money Kickstarter that sits on the shelf.

Exactly. Just like I suspect coyote & crow will be. A coffee book or 'see how woke I am' piece on the bookshelf.

The only reason I would buy this is for the funky element dice.
Otherwise I think I'd rather recover my notes for the Savage World mod I wanted to write 10 years ago.
But 10 years means it's just going to end up like most nostalgia stuff: better kindly remembered than re-exposed to the harsh light of modern reality.

I never watch Avatar so I have no skin in this particular game and no strong feelings towards Avatar one way or the other.

I do find it hilarious that, as much as these Tumblrina types like to lecture us about "cultural appropriation," something they adore is an ur-example of it.

Avatar is absolutely cultural appropriation.  The story of Avatar is entirely Western in theme and characterization but dressed up like a Chinese Wuxia story.  You can tell because the central mythology uses the "4 Elements" Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

This is the Greco-Roman system.  Classical Chinese philosophers believed in a system of 5 elements not 4: Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood.

EDIT: Only listed 4 elements.  Derp.

The thing I dislike about the success of this Kickstarter is its going to give Magpie Games al the woke, SJW clout they will ever need for producing the most successful rpg KS of all time and also cause them to think this success is because of good game design.

I also think a lot of Avatar fans will hate the finished product because it uses PbtA and Avatar Legends is just a Masks reskin. Every facet of AL is Masks so there is nothing original in the game. There is no crunch at all. There isnt even a real Bending power system in AL. It's all pure narrative.
