Title: Anyone playing Mutant Future?
Post by: Spinachcat on February 20, 2009, 03:45:15 PM
I was quite impressed with Goblinoid Games' Mutant Future RPG - its a retro-clone of Gamma World...but with a lot more.    While Labyrinth Lord is pretty much a direct clone of Basic/Expert D&D, Mutant Future takes lots of good stuff from Gamma World and adds some of its own flair.   Like LL, MF is free.

So...anyone playing Mutant Future?  How does it compare in actual play versus Gamma World?  Is there a growing MF community?

Raises up hand eagerly

When I first got MF it was a bit of a revelation, I could not wait to spring it on my group. I ended up adding a whole lot of stuff culled from GW and Darwin World (I think I trippled the number of mutations avaiable as well as classes).

Then my PC died and I lost all the work I'd done for the campaign...oh well.

I only played GW once years ago, I can't remember which edition it was.

Making the comparison from what recolections I have I think Mutant Future looks nicer, plays better, is versatile to the nth-degree, and has a more solid and streamlined rules system. It also doesn't make PCs who are as God-ubber or pitifully useless as you could roll under GW.

There is a MF community on the web, I was part of it. You can check my blog http://jakalla.blogspot.com/ under "Mutant Future Stuff" down on the right table, to see some of my creations.

I was a player of the Barrier Peaks RPG http://barrierpeaksrpg.wordpress.com/ until my PC meltdown. The game is over now but the site's still there.

Lastly of course there's Goblinoids Games forum where there is a section for Mutant Future http://www.freeyabb.com/goblinoidgames/

I think MF is a funny romp of a game that delivers just what it promisses...for free!  If only there where more games that could claim the same.

I've had fun running 2 MF PBEMs and am currently playing in a third on the Goblinoid Games' BBS.  I think I maybe want something a bit less wahoo than Gamma World for my post apocalypse gaming though.  I kinda prefer mutants and androids as things the heroes hack up, not as the heroes.

Just limit the racial options to Humans then. :)

Man, I keep trying, but I can't get my wife rope in -- and I'm playing VERY VERY LITTLE OF ANYTHING these days and it's REALLY REALLY BOTHERING ME.

Don't despair Doc. Have you considered giving the net a try as a veichle for your RPG-ing needs?

If it's any consolation I know how you feel. Before kickstarting my Pendragon game about two weeks ago I hadn't gamed for over 6 months!

Yeah, my more recent MF PBP featured present day humans sucked through a time warp into "New York of the Apes".  :)

I played a few sessions set in a post-apocalyptic argentina. Character had to be all humans, but I introduced a simple skill system based on Melan´s Kard es Magia.

There was a soccer skill, for death-maches where the losers were all killed in inhuman rituals. .

I had plans to run MF Metamorphosis Alpha-style when my turn to GM the group comes up, very much inspired by Gene Wolfe's Book of the Long Sun.  The group liked my Traveller pitch better, though.

I've got a few notes and will hopefully get to use them down the road, however.

My copy of the softcover version from lulu.com will arrive any day now.  I should be able to get a few games in sometime later this year.

I have plans for using MF with the appendix for D&D level characters as part of a Basic Fantasy game.  There are two strange islands and one of them is inhabited by strange mutated creatures.  It's not a MF game exactly but MF will prove very useful so I don't have to work out mutation rules.

The Mazes & Mutants chapter is great!   Years ago, I ran an AD&D campaign only using Gamma World monsters and it was a blast.   It was brilliant for Goblinoid Games to make that tie between MF and Labyrinth Lord.

I'm in two games right now and am trying to get both groups to try Labyrinth Lord and Mutant Future as a break. I love what I've read from Goblinoid Games in the rules of both.
