This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I found myself in that position in a couple months back, bringing with me only my Cthulhu books, Dark Heresy, UnHallowed Metropolis, Unknown Armies, and SWSE.

What i lost?

Shadowrun
Most of my 3rd ed D&D, though I brought Ptolus.
Earthdawn
Gatecrasher
Trail Of Cthulhu
Hercules and Xena (i was rather fond of this boxed game)
GURPS 3rd ed, with Transhuma Space, GURPS Time Travel, Gurps Supers.

Lot of books i'm missing, has anybody found themselves in a similar situation?

On one hand you say "willingly" but on the other hand it sounds like you're full of regrets. What happened with these books ?

I wouldn't ditch games willingly, except maybe the very small proportion of books that I purchased under the influence of ketamine (Vampire clan books I'm looking at you).

After I left my wife in December, I brought them to my brother's where I stayed with him for a couple months. My younger brother is a racist piece of shit with a foul temper, basically a hate crime waiting to happen. I pretty much packed as much of my stuff as I could, and moved to Virginia to escape that situation. Yeah, I regret leaving a lot of it. As it was, I was hauling around 300 pounds worth of luggage by myself via greyhound. I pretty much brought what I could. :(

I had to sell off a few once.  I still miss my Pendragon book.

I also got my Sailor Moon and SWRPG R&E books stolen, and that sucked too.

Well, the D&D shit is easily replaceable. It's the Earthdawn And 4th ed Shadowrun books I'm going to really miss.

When I was in high school, my Dad was still in, "Take things away if he doesn't behave" mode. Sometime in my Freshman year he took all of my gaming materials, comic books, etc. and locked them in a trunk in the garage. Most of this was TSR stuff AD&D, Gamma World, Star Frontiers plus a few other things like Traveller. As I progressed through high school, I shaped up and found other games, so I mostly forgot about the trunk. After I graduated, my Dad asked me if I still wanted the "D&D stuff" in the trunk. Thinking I didn't particularly want the D&D books, I said not really. So he sold the entire trunk to somebody at work, which was not what I wanted.

Then about 10 years ago I willingly sold off the vast majority of my gaming material - books that I never used or did not want. This included tons of GURPS, Rifts, other Palladium games, the entirety of my Cyberpunk collection, HERO, and quite a number of others that I had accumulated over the decade before that. The only things I kept were games that either I could not bring myself to part with (both copies of TFOS and my Mekton books), games I was actually playing (Tribe 8, Jovian Chronicles) or games that I really enjoyed (Blue Planet). I've never regretted it and to this day the only things I've really added to my gaming collection are Exalted books, and a few books for games like Blue Planet or Jovian Chronicles that I was missing. I did buy several D&D 3e books when it first came out, but as soon as the nostalgia wore off and I realized I wasn't going to get to play I sold them to a friend of mine.

Over the years I've done periodi purges of my games collection. Much of what wnet was utter rubbish I should have known better than getting in the first place, but I also got rid of many really top quality games like Pendragon and Amber which I had run extensively and enjoyed but at some level I just knew I was done with them. And I've never come to regret it.

On the other hand there a few games I've no interest in running at all but which have survived various purges on account that I lkind of like the artwork. Among these is BTCR's Warpworld and Masterbook's Wolrd of Aden.
New! Cyberblues City - like cyberpunk, only more mellow. Free, fully illustrated roleplaying game based on the Fudge system
Bounty Hunters of the Atomic Wastelands, a post-apocalyptic western game based on Fate. It's simple, it's free and it's in colour!

I sold off a lot of books four or so years back out of necessity (financial.) Disability is NOT some sort of glowly helpful state that you get in the U.S, its hard to get, and is a mere pittance to the hours I worked and money I put into the system previously.

I lost several books I wish I still possessed. Yet as I grow more development oriented I do find myself looking at game books as things to give friends to run after I've read them; and simply writing my own when needed to fill a similar role of genre and theme. (Mind you I only think my ideas, so some books are welcome boons in "I'd never have thought of that!" Such as Hellas or Talislanta.)

I did it right before I moved to Hungary (about 20 books all told), and now I'm slowly accumulating again as I only buy game books near the end of the year.

Before that, when I lived in Japan, I did it semi-regularly, which was somewhat stupid, as I would very often end up wanting those books again and going out and buying them all over (I must have done this 4 times with HERO 5th, for example, and Silhouette Core). Some of those books surely would have made the cut when I moved to Hungary and I really wish I had them now (like Core, and the Tribe 8 2nd edition I had, sigh). Now I'm torn between trying to re-buy that stuff or get new games this year.

I've sold tons, most of what I had, I've not regretted a single book.

I do rather reget though many years ago leaving a whole load of books "safe" with my parents for storage.  They forgot what they were or decided I didn't want them anymore and threw them out.  I discovered when I asked for them back as I now had a place big enough to store them.

Many of those books are now rare, and many of them I couldn't now replace.

So, I don't regret anything I chose to get rid of, I do regret those I didn't choose to get rid of but that were got rid of for me.

I'm in the process of culling again my collection, and I haven't ever regretted giving away / selling a single book.

Actually, I was at a friend's place and I saw my old WEG Star Wars corebook on a table, getting use and lots of love. That was great.
My name is Ramón Nogueras. Running now Vampire: the Masquerade (Giovanni Chronicles IV for just 3 players), and itching to resume my Call of Cthulhu campaign (The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man).

I have sold some without any regret but I also stored some in the basement...before I knew that it flooded on occasion.   They got soaked even when I put them in plastic tubs and sealed the lids really tight.:(

Yes, once I sold/traded off a good portion of my collection and have regretted it ever since.  Once I'm dead, I will willingly let my wife or daughters sell off my collection. :)
