This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Any big announcements at Gencon?

Lol, not sure if this was supoosed to be a poke but these guys are the ones who get shit on by some grognards for not creating proper 'Gygaxian' D&D. I suggest you check out Stuart's work, it is far from generic fantasy.

congrats on winning and having a great time! :)

You know, people keep comparing non-TSR D&D to deck-building in Magic: the Gathering. But maybe it\'s more like Katamari Damacy. You keep sticking shit on your characters until they are big enough to be a star.

Can't argue that, but saying the OSR 'cleaned up' seems to be overstating things when Chaosium and Tales from the Loop both took home more awards. 'Strong showing' or the like would be more accurate, IMO.

Someone should have told all the people playing RPGs.  Then we would have realized that we were supposed to have a lousy time.

In fairness, there's a ton of boardgames at Gen Con.  I guess I don't give a shit.  I prefer RPGs but I do love a good board game.   I was sorely tempted by Cthulhu Wars with its awesome chunky primary color minis, but when I realized I could get it cheaper from amazon and I'd have to have the huge thing shipped, anyway, I came to my senses.

What I noticed in the dealers' room is that EuroGames have taken over; that is, high production values, lots of specialized components, simple play.  Like the X-Wing game; the game play is virtually identical to the TSR "Air Power" WW2 aircraft game of 40 years ago, but they use glitzy components to keep track of everything instead of a piece of paper.

Somebody had a Conan boardgame with custom figures and etc, and said the game play was "half an hour to an hour".

As a veteran of Diplomacy, Kingmaker, and Drang Noch Osten, my mind, it is boggled.
You should go to GaryCon.  Period.

The rules can\'t cure stupid, and the rules can\'t cure asshole.

Agreed! When I did my last open Braunstein, one of the players made a point of telling his audience how well and easily I made the five and a half hours of game time go by. These days, I make sure that any RPG game sessions run for two, two and half hours tops. Otherwise, people don't want to play, as they don't want to invest that much time in a game session.

What we did, back in the day, of a pleasant afternoon and evening - with a break for a convivial dinner with everyone in between - seems to be a long-lost form of social get-together that is largely absent in today's gaming hobby. I'm not scrapping the buffet table just yet, though... :)

True enough. In fact, there were tons of OSR products that were ignored.

Well, they're just following the people who claim to 'not have time' to play long games anymore.  I have no idea if it's true that they don't have the time, but if you're vocal enough, you get noticed.

The Conan game is pretty nice, if full of fiddly figure-y bits.
