Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

An utter shit job of tying things up.

Just read through the clan and bloodline listings for OWOD clans/bloodlines and noticed that Gehenna was utter shit. I see mention of 2 antediluvians rising/ awakening and not much else. I mean, who the fuck wiped out the Tremere Antis, and what other antes other than Ravnos and Tzimisce awakened?

The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.

Dunno, I lost all interest in the meta-plot when it got all nuke heavy.

Benoist

There was no set-in-stone "real" metaplot going on behind the scenes. Some elements were decided, like Saulot surviving in the body of Tremere, and Tremere surviving in Goratrix, with Etrius aware of it all, but the "truth" in its entirety was never truly decided, and up for grabs.

That's why the whole Gehenna thing doesn't work for fans of the game. Because fans wanted "THE" truth, not "Make up your own truth", which was the point of the Gehenna supplements.

Oh, ok, I get it. That's kinda cool. Still, a bit convoluted.

Convoluted is the word. The background, for years and years, through dozens upon dozens of supplements, became super-rich, extremely detailed, with game lines often contradicting each others' plot threads and secrets, and the reality was that there was no point to it all beyond getting the game lines going with release upon release. There was no End Game. There was no overarching plot, no metaplot to it all. It was like saying "Oh you know guys? The reason why you've been playing the games all along? Meh. Nevermind. There wasn't any point! LOL!"

Hence, huge flop of the Gehenna books.

Good reason to not use metaplot as your primary motivating factor for playing/running a given game...=)

Shal,

 You were expecting Shakespeare?

I think it might have been a case of the WW guys going "Oh, hey we got this cool idea of how to re-do some of our game mechanics and maybe it would work better if our setting was started from scratch."

OTHER WW GUY: "Um,, fellas we've been building up to this big something or other apocalypse for years...all of our loyal goth groupies are expecting...well something ..."

1st WW GUY: "Shit! We forgot about that . Call up the guys and reserve the nearby coffee house - we'll have this sketched out by Monday. They'll never know we did it in a hurry."

4e definitely has an Old School feel. If you disagree, cool. I won\'t throw any hyperbole out to prove the point.

I was thinking of changing my avatar, and then I got inspired. Thanks Philotomy!
I am no longer posting here or reading this forum because Pundit has regularly claimed credit for keeping this community active. I am sick of his bullshit for reasons I explain here and I don\'t want to contribute to anything he considers to be a personal success on his part.

I recommend The RPG Pub as a friendly place where RPGs can be discussed and where the guiding principles of moderation are "be kind to each other" and "no politics". It\'s pretty chill so far.

So if most of the Vampire and White Wolf players felt let down by the end of the oWOD, where did they go to get their kicks?

Did they pretend the end never happened, wind the clock back and run the game in perpertual "its going to happen tomorrow", or did the migrate to the nWOD or go elsewhere?

That's a good question I don't know the answer to. I myself stopped buying WW stuff a bit after the release of Kindred of the East, which was the drop that made me say "too much is too much", and just purchased the Gehenna books to complete the circle when they came out.

I suspect that some just went on with New World of Darkness, while others started playing other games, like d20 variants, Scion games, Exalted and others, with a minority still playing OWoD.

I myself had a long d20 hiatus, until Promethean made me connect with the NWoD. My Paris by Night WoD game world is now mechanically NWoD, with a patchwork background including OWoD chunks, bits of Nephilim and a majority of my own design materials.

I can't imagine I'd be the only guy with this story to share.

For modern day games? No where really, just stuck to fantasy and Sci Fi. I suppose Castle Falkenstein came closest.

That said, I started playing in a Changing:the Lost game earlier that year, first WoD game in a very long time.

I bought all the core WW books, except Wraith, up to second edition. After all the alternate time periods popped up, I stopped giving my money to White Wolf, because it became evident that they intended to just keep recycling the properties in new editions. Personally, I didn't like the idea of a metaplot involving these games. It became way too messy. I particularly wasn't interested in which groups took over which cities. I mean, it's just a game -- why I should get that involved in it?
