This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So, anybody seen this yet?  My copy just showed up.  Apparently this is one of the big games in Spain, and there was a Kickstarter to bring it to the US.

Beautiful game, with a nice picture of a red dragon fighting a guy on the front.

Intro by Mentzer.

Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling are classes.

XP for GP.

Amazing production values.

This could become my favorite retroclone.

I'll post pics in a bit.

Scott Anderson

Eric tenkar just got his too. He put up a photo of the box on his website thingy. It sure looks swell.
With no fanfare, the stone giant turned to his son and said, "That\'s why you never build a castle in a swamp."

Skywalker

Its a very pretty version of B/X D&D with some added classes from AD&D (Paladin and Ranger). I liked what I have seen, especially given that its my favourite version of official D&D. I would have liked to see Basic Fantasy's minor tweaks of ascending AC and race/class split, but that's a minor quibble.

I was under the impression it's more BECM than B/X.

Pretty minor difference, but still...that's why they had Frank Mentzer write the intro

I see it more as B/X as it only goes to level 14 and Thieves Abilities follow the more rapidly increasing B/X ones than the glacial BECMI ones. But yeah, its a minor difference.

The Butcher

So it's B/X capped at level 14 with Paladins and Rangers? With nice art?

I don't want to sound dismissive or anything (the pics do look gorgeous and I'm all for everyone publishing their houserules and campaign notes, the more the merrier), but don't we already (off the top of my head) three B/X clones and derivatives? LL, LotFP, ACKS?

Does AitEM being anything new to the table?

Level cap for most classes is L20. Race Classes range from 8-12 for the most part. Despite the L20 cap, the Thief uses the B/X skill progression which caps at L14. The class itself caps at 20 however. This means the Thief doesn't suffer from the BECMI stretching it out across 36 levels.

There are some differences, but over all it is a B/X/BECMI clone. It is one of the few games to release lately as a box set with excellent art and production values. Whether or not this is appealing to you is a matter of taste.

Basically yes, it is B/X/BECM D&D with very good art.

Why? Well, take into account that there may be a lot of retroclones in English, but this one is the first one in Spanish. Since this is the first Spanish retroclone, it was kind of expected that it would be imitative. What I never expected was that it would be translated into English, perhaps the excellent art by Manzanedo helped.

I think Art and Production values helped a lot in it getting an English translation. YES, there are a lot of Retroclones on the market. YES, most of those also clone the art style of the original version of the game they are based off of.

While the old art styles are great for nostalgia, it gets old after a while... East Mark I think proves that you can do a Retroclone these days with high production values, and with an art style that is refreshingly new.

Plus, box set... I'm a sucker for Box Sets... The RPG Industry as a WHOLE really needs to put out more box sets. Pathfinder Beginner's Box, Dragon Age PRG, and now Adventures in the East Mark are all great sets.

I look forward to the East Mark Blue Box which will detail the East Mark Setting. Should be coming to Kickstarter sometime later this year (I hope). Hopefully we'll also get the Green and Black sets here too.

I look at it this way:  How would I feel if WotC said that they were doing a version of B/X, except they were taking the rules and making it a "full" production, with modern standards for layout, design, art, etc?

I'd be pretty damn excited.

And that's what this basically is, except without the WotC name.

Does it do anything that Labyrinth Lord doesn't?  Not really.  But now that I have both, if I'm going to reach for one, it'll be AitEM.

I am a backer and I am qite impatient to get my box ! I intend to use it with Lotfp (because ascending AC makes more sense to me).

KS hit at the wrong time, is this available normally yet?

Disclaimer: I did not just claim people who use Kickstarter are abnormal.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

They're still shipping the KS rewards, so I'm pretty sure it's not.

You can get it via DTRPG as a PDF and I believe the physical copies are available for direct order.

Its far prettier than all those options, less variant than ACKS and LotFP, and is supposedly well expanded in three upcoming box sets.

Its also been around a while in Spanish, so its not a new endeavour.
