This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

When RPG task examples are lame

Quote from: Shawn Driscoll;669678Their "digging a hole" example was to show off their Lifting skill the game has.  A Lifting skill?  Yes, for lifting a shovel full of dirt.  Is that a die roll per scoop?  Are we trying to make hole masterpieces?  Bottomless holes?  Have an army to bury soon?  Be able to dig a hole period?  Be able to lift shovels properly?

I'm beginning to suspect that the D6 mechanic is just an excuse for dice-happy players.

Perhaps the authors are huge fans of The Shoveller. They want to make sure such a character can be created in their system and that he will be able to shovel well. ;)
Quote from: JonWakeGamers, as a whole, are much like primitive cavemen when confronted with a new game. Rather than \'oh, neat, what\'s this do?\', the reaction is to decide if it\'s a sex hole, then hit it with a rock.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

Quote from: Kyle Aaron;766997In the randomness of the dice lies the seed for the great oak of creativity and fun. The great virtue of the dice is that they come without boxed text.

I would expect my grave robber character to have a high digging skill.

This may be inadmissible because its from a fan-made product, but here's an extract of the Phoenix Command Amatorial Rules, which made me cringe anyway:

I'll spare you the Servicing rules.

I would have guessed it to be lame simply because it used the term "Amatorial."

I rub my eyes, but the text doesn't disappear. Isn't this a game about military combat in general? Why would they start their examples with lame seduction attempt.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don\'t Like You thread should be closed

Oh, to be fair, its from someone's home grown supplement not the main rules. Some people just need rules for getting it on with the NPCs and if they're not there, by god they'll make them. Its painfully awkward, but from what I remember for most part its still classier than the equivalent 2nd Edition D&D, 3rd Ed. D&D (the one written by Andy Collin's wife), or GURPS fan supplements.

Or the seduction rules from the last World of Darkness corebook.

They're a sure antidote for anybody who thinks HERO System is dry and involves too much math.

RPGPundit

Bad enough that there are seduction rules.  Worse still if they're presented as mechanics on par with certified public accounting.

Incidentally, the recent rules update to the Storytelling System, in The God-Machine Chronicle, may have simplified things somewhat by introducing a general subsystem of "social maneuvering". The first step is also always for the GM to decide whether the goal of the action sounds reasonable, so there's no talking kings into handing over their thrones due to sheer natural charisma.
Previously known by the name of "GrimGent".

I really like when task examples are used to communicate the implied setting or play style.

Works better than fluff texts or short story intros. (For me, that is.)
Swords & Wizardry & Manga ... oh my.
