Ability scores

Stats are one of the most overrated parts of a character. Even though they do provide mechanical benefits, they don't actually make a character more fun.
With no fanfare, the stone giant turned to his son and said, "That\'s why you never build a castle in a swamp."

Sez you.

I've had lots of fun playing off my stats and so have others in my group and elsewhere.

Others Ive known barely even know they have stats...

And even one or two who only saw the mechanical and numbers and little else.

Different approaches.

Maybe.

But that assumes you only get high stats with bonuses.

I played a fighter in 1E dnd that was an archer and had a 3 dexterity. It was glorious fun!

I have seen players that really really enjoy 'high stats'

Quote from: Omega;764432This is why I've been going with the point buy system. It caps at 15 which means at best you have a 16-17 score and room to grow into if you dont spent the stat ups on feats.

Polaris over at TBP is mewling about this very thing, even to the point of getting their first thread locked for calling Mearls incompetent and a liar over it.

General consensus is that it gives a little boost to human characters while discouraging the temptation to choose whichever race will give you an 18 right off the bat.

I like it myself and will probably offer it as an alternative should someone prefer not to roll. Although at 15 no doubt many players will go with the dice, thinking they can do better.

Odds are they will. But that's the benefit for taking a little risk.

I'm waiting for Polaris to criticize the shrink wrap on the starter box.

Quote from: Bill;764341Anyone have any thoughts on the fact ability scores for a fighter are higher than for a wizard?

Unless I missed something, all classes do not get the same number of boosts to ability scores from gaining levels.

I think it is cool, but curious what others have to say.

Makes sense.  Fighters rely entirely on their own abilities, while casters lean on magic.  Fighters simply spend more time practicing their abilities.

Mechanically, since the casters have more options available with their spells, this helps even it out by giving Fighters more options with feats.

Only if someone other than me rolls. Well up till 5th... I just cannot win with 4d6h3. Except for the rare times I have... but those dont count. :o

Quote from: Marleycat;764859This. They operate like FantasyCraft in that they do multiple things anything from getting an ability + with languages and another perk to basically being a prestige class on it's own.

Exactly! I totally got a FantasyCraft vibe of feats when I saw them. Good catch.

Am I off base in saying it makes the Fighter one of the most multiclass friendly classes in the game?

The next time will be different. Just pick up those dice and roll. Take a chance.

WHAT HARM CAN POSSIBLY COME FROM IT

Also Feats, yes! I am chomping at the bit to see these. I'm hoping they're good enough to take some of the emphasis off increasing stats. Ideally they'll be mechanically useful AND flavorful enough that they make the charop crowds unimaginative brains sizzle from indecision.

It's going to be interesting to see how Multiclassing works out due to five big differences from 3.5.

  • You need a high score in both you starting class and class you are going into.
  • You do *Not* get all the proficiencies from your second class at level one.
  • Most of the really good class abilities (Extra Attack, Uncanny Dodge, Fireball) kick in at level 5.
  • Getting feats is based upon individual class levels, rather than your overall character level.
  • You can't mix subclasses. So if you are a Fighter (Champion) you can never multiclass into Fighter (Eldritch Knight).

Hell no, it's the only class to get 7:feats/stat bumps and gets 2 attacks by level 5. The Barbarian, Paladin and Ranger have to wait until level 8.
