This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: James J SkachI'm kinda honored in a perplexed way that you might be interested in what response I would have.
You're forgetting why I come to discussion forums - to have conversations with people. If I only wanted to speak, I'd use my blog, if I wanted to speak and actually have an audience, I'd use my blog and say something ridiculous and controversial. I come here, or to any forum, for the back-and-forth of a real conversation.

I'm interested in what everyone has to think, whether in response to what I've said, or to what someone else has said, or their own thoughts springing up unprompted. It's all democratic and stuff.

I didn't necessarily think you'd reply to me specifically, but I thought you'd have some comments and questions about what others have written - otherwise it's just a big list of likes...

Sometimes, I just like to listen.  Set off the idea-trigger and watch the cascading reaction. You'll probably note that my responses were really efforts to draw more out of the posters - like you! Look how successful that was!

I, too, am interested. As I mentioned in the OP, I'd love to see it break off into separate little conversations about each "sub-system." None of which necessarily requires my comments. It's kind of my attempt at humility ;)

Try to see it as an effort to get more people to respond by not reacting to anyone's ideas. On the Internet in particular, even something meant as a positive reinforcement can be taken negatively – and I'm just trying to practice the brainstorming approach. If I found something worth building on, I'd comment. Right now I'm just looking for everyone to speak up and get the ideas on the board (too much management training).

Fair enough.  And before this gets us into one of our lengthy debates that should be taken to Off Topic:

  • I love all the ideas. Thanks to everyone for responding.
  • Let's get more!!!
  • I find the dearth of Levi's requirements interesting - perhaps his tabletop is influenced greatly by his LARPness.
  • Your d4-d4 system is an interesting approach.  I'm particularly struck how you explain how mechanics can translate into the "feel" of a game.  I think it's a part of "theory" or "craft" discussions that gets dropped. It's why I suggested in Spikes thread on dice mechanics in the Design forum that one of the things described along with each type of randomization mechanic is how it can influence the "feel" of the game. That's the kind of insight I would feed off of and what I was looking for in theory when I first came searching.
  • I'm struck by how many people are close with one game.
  • I'm struck by how many people point to GURPS skills, advantages, and disadvantages. For all of the flaming some have recently given it, the list itself is apparently a bit of a standard.
How's that for a start?

Keep them coming folks!

Christmas Ape

Hmmmm. Alright then.

Core Stuff: The ORE skeleton with four constant attributes (Fitness, Coordination, Acuity, Intelligence), two other attributes, a skill list in the 20-30 range, and (Dis)Advantages constructed for the campaign.
Class/Lifepaths: Something between Burning Wheel, Traveller, and the Central Casting books.
Advancement: Fast-flowing drama/advancement points, fed at least partially by TSoY-style Keys, spent directly on the things you want to improve. It'd have a better exchange rate if you spend them in play than hoard them to the end.
Levels: L5R's insight levels, where it expresses how powerful you are rather than determining it.
Combat: Like ORE, but tick-based, with bolt-on options; added complexities for melee combat inspired by Fight!, Spike's Dynamic Combat thread, and TRoS (particularly in damage), modern combat informed by Burning Empires' Firefight & the Godlike squad combat rules, and a more abstract version for cinematic games, tracking impact and advantage rather than individual strikes and damage.
Mass Combat: Unit-based abstraction of the regular combat system with L5R's "heroic moments".
Special Effects: Iron Heroes style token pools, both for magic and combat techniques. I just think they're a lot of fun in play.
Swinery & Stolen Whole Cloth: Steel tests.
TRoS-style Spiritual Attributes, feeding a pool somewhere between Will from Wild Talents and Exalted's Essence. Probably plays into the special effects token pools above.
A wheel reminiscent of the oMage Paradox/Quintessence tracker, where one caps the other, sharing the faintest similarity between that, the relationship of power and humanity in Sorceror, and Rage and Gnosis from W:tA - while the two traits are specific to the setting, and not all use the wheel, when it is used the effect on gameplay for favoring one other other is pronounced.

There might be some other stuff I'm forgetting. My notes are a little hectic and it's only the tiniest bit done.
Heroism is no more than a chapter in a tale of submission.

It's posts like this that make me realize I am so sheltered when it comes to gaming...

Posts like that are the result of realizing that you have roughly 70 hours of free time a week to work on gaming-related materials, including the time at work alone and unoccupied, then deciding to Frankenstein the hell out of every fun thing you've ever seen in gaming.

YOU might have that much time for that on your hands.
I still gotta go to work and have a job...and stuff like that . Hell , I'm the Assistant Manager and the local  Manager is out of town for 2 weeks re-modeling a store in Tennessee.
I'm lucky I get free time. to work on my campaign at all.

I go to work, man. I'm a night auditor - I work between 11:30pm and 7:30am, and other than an hour or so of paperwork and minor guest services, I'm pretty much unoccupied and alone. It's great time to throw on the radio and get some gaming stuff done. I actually have more free time now than when I was in school.

Hell, I'm working on a completely different system for wu xia stuff, cribbing from Qin, WotG (what I can understand of it), and L5R. Nothing fancy, but it'll get the job done.
