I absolutely adore "A Song of Ice and Fire".  Seriously.  I'm not exaggerating when I say that I think it's probably the best fantasy series I've ever read - maybe even the best fantasy series ever written in terms of quality and consistency. When I heard that White Wolf and G.O.O. had produced a game based on these novels I went right out and purchased the Deluxe Version with an eye towards running a Westeros game for my group.

I was sorely disappointed to discover that Guardians of Order chose to use the D20 system for this game.  On one hand, I felt that they made a lot of good "fixes" to D20 to make it more in line with the setting.  The game is deep, complex and contains a myriad of options that most OGL products lack.

The problem is that it's still D20.  You can polish a turd up so that it shines like a diamond - you can even bronze it - but at the end of the day, it's still just a turd.  

The TriStat version offered as an appendix to the book gave a bit more leeway in char gen but it still failed to satisfy.  I've always found TriStat games to be somewhat anemic and lacking in "crunch".  The Game of Thrones version was no different.

So that's when I decided to take matters into my own hands and adapt the setting to the Roll and Keep system (Legends of the Five Rings & 7th Sea).  The problem is, I don't know where to start.  And so i turn to you!

Any advice or ideas?

Actually, when I talked to him about it he told me he thought it was a bad idea.  He's not a fan of the source material so he probably wouldn't be the best person for it anyway.

On a more serious note, I don't know the source material. Is it really that good? For some reason for the longest time I thought the books had something to do with Clan of the Cave Bear or something.

Sorry - I've been thinking about doing my own AGOT conversion, but I was looking at something like Burning Wheel.  I'm not familiar with the roll and keep games.

Well, unfortunately I didn't care all that much for the books, and the game system is way way way down on my list, so I really couldn't help much.

This is my favorite fantasy series as well.

I have the delux version of the game with tri-stat conversions and it is pretty good. That said you could just use the free version of tri-stat.

I think that the Iridium system is a natural fir for it as well, since it a gritty and deadly system. Also I think the magic system in the irdium system better depict the magic in books.

I'm not too familiar with Lo5R but I do have 7th Sea. Roll and Keep is not the system that would come to my mind for Martin's world.

One very good match IMO is GURPS. It will be sufficiently gritty, it has a system that will adapt very well to this world and the genre conventions. Song of Ice and Fire characters range from children to veterans and have all sorts of occupations, skills and social status. GURPS can support a wide variety of character concepts such as those. You could customize certain parts of the game, add interesting social stuff and maybe a drama point mechanic similar to what is found in Unisystem if need be.

The other suggestion is to go completely the other way with a more story-oriented system that doesn't go into details. We use Story Engine (from PIGames) for our Song of Ice and Fire-inspired campaign and it works marvelously well. It facilitates everything I like about the novels and captures the spirit.

I think you might get a nice fit out of l5r, all I'd do is change the names and - obviously - ditch/replace some of the more obviously oriental touches.

I'd think Burning Wheel (with a tweaked combat/DoW system, mayhap) or Iridium would be nice fits for it.  I didn't think Tri-Stat did all that poor a job for that matter.
 
Not to be another useless poster to this thread, but while I'd be interested in seeing what you came up with, I'm not familiar enough with roll & keep to be of much help.  But consider me a well-wisher.

Strangely enough, I'd thought about doing a conversion of d20 Rokugan to the d20 AGoT rules.  So obviously I think there may be a decent fit there, and I'd assume the same goes for AGoT -> Roll and Keep, since that was Lot5R's system in the first place.  However, like a few other posters in the thread, I'm not familiar enough with the roll and keep system to help you out.  Still, best of luck.  I'd be interested to see what you come up with.
