This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

A deluxe edition that's too deluxe?

So apparently Cubicle 7 is making a 10 book collector's edition of Warhammer's classic The Enemy Within campaign that's going to sell for...$749.95?

I've purchased some boutique items myself (like the new Masks of Nyarlathotep), but this seems ridiculous. What do people think, is there really a market out there for a nearly $800 rpg product, or has Cubicle 7 gone a bridge too far with this one?

kythri

Well, that Beadle & Grimm's Waterdeep Dragonheist thing sold for $499, and it sold out, so I'd say there's a fair chance it'll sell.

I thought there were only four or five books in the Enemy Within campaign. They were good, I guess, but not $750 good.

Too rich for my blood. I had a hard time stomaching the Call of Cthulhu 7th box set.
The more clichéd my group plays their characters, the better. I don't want Deep Drama™ and Real Acting™ in the precious few hours away from my family and job. I want cheap thrills, constant action, involved-but-not-super-complex plots, and cheesy but lovable characters.

Remember when people were shocked at the price of Ptolus, which was selling for the relatively paltry (by today's standards) sum of $120? This hobby both attracts collectors, and has grayed to the point where a lot of people have more money than time to play. Which is why, in the 13 years since, the market for collectible editions has grown by leaps and bounds. I don't know if this particular product will attract enough buyers at a $750 price point to satisfy Cubicle 7, but given an OD&D first print sold for $22K less than 3 years ago, I don't think we've reached the peak.

And I thought Modiphius' Borg Cube for Star Trek was expensive.

kythri

Ostensibly, the Warhammer collector set doesn't have the Skarka-taint that the Star Trek product does...that's gotta be worth a couple bucks, yeah?

Razor 007

I purchase individual books, on a book by book basis.  $60 is the upper limit, and a very rare purchase price paid.

The artwork is nice in the new books, and my obsessive nature gets the better of me sometimes; but I wouldn't buy a 10 book set of anything at that price, even if I won the lottery.
I need you to roll a perception check.....

Ditto.

There are dudes dumping $10k into RPG Kickstarters; there are a lot of people that buy this crap because they have tons of disposable income but no time to play it.

I dunno about $800, but I spent $260 for the SJGames boxed game KS, and I doubt I'll ever get to play them. Triplanetary and TFT KS stuff is still on my floor, unopened...

The TFT Legacy Edition was a bit too much. The price was good if you picked it up during the KS ($60) but it's not so much a boxed set as a crate full of stuff, a lot of which is redundant for playing the game.

Too much?

For me, absolutely.  I'll get on fine with the Plebian Edition.

Theory of Games

I'll post the OD&D Rules Cyclopedia.

It goes super-deluxe with full rules for running levels 1-36. Tons of options. It does a lot.

You're fine with Master's edition OD&D but, the RC gives you more than you need.

Way more.
TTRPGs are just games. Friends are forever.

BrokenCounsel

If you're a completist and have the spare cash, then sure. Me, I like to use what I buy, and I'm not gonna drop $700 on a 10 volume Warhammer campaign that might look mighty purdy, but be full of padding that's there only to justify the cost.

kanePL

I've spent 1200$ on a graphics card. Many people would've called it dumb, aaaand probably they'd be right :D I guess they've researched the market beforehand. Lots of nerds from 90's are probably rich fellas now, they'd buy it out of nostalgia.
