This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ever use a synth while GMing?

Quote from: VengerSatanis;848944Yeah, it's a weird question.  But I was thinking that a small, portable synthesizer would help with sound effects.  Need dark tones during the analysis of that rapist's semen?  Bam!  Your synth is right there next to you.

Has anyone ever done that?  Have you ever seen anyone use a synth while gaming?

VS

No, but I make funny voices and verbal sound effects. Does that count?

I would be SO into that if a GM did that.

You rock Venger!
Rules and design matter
The players are in charge
Simulation is narrative
Storygames are RPGs

I'd only use one if I decided to run Far Cry: Blood Dragon, where it would be required.
I made a blog: Southern Style GURPS

I used to have two CDs: one of animal noises (lions roaring, snakes hissing) and the other was horror sounds like from a haunted house (creaking doors, rattling chains, ominous winds, distant moaning, etc). I let the second one play on a constant loop at low volume for an adventure in a tomb and it really helped with setting the mood for the game. The animal noises were used very sparingly because everyone would start arguing what kind of animal it was.
Jesus Fucking Christ, is this guy honestly that goddamned stupid? He can\'t understand the plot of a Star Wars film? We\'re not talking about "Rashomon" here, for fuck\'s sake. The plot is as linear as they come. If anything, the film tries too hard to fill in all the gaps. This guy must be a flaming retard.  --Mike Wong on Red Letter Moron\'s review of The Phantom Menace

I used to have two separate cassette tapes of mood music -- one for "mystery" and one for "combat," both of clips running about 45 minutes.

(Sue me.  This was the early 90s.)

I tried doing it again with MP3 clips about ten years ago, but stopped after a short time.  As I get older, extemporaneous sounds increasingly distract and baffle me, and I like background music less and less.
This was a cool site, until it became an echo chamber for whiners screeching about how the "Evul SJWs are TAKING OVAH!!!" every time any RPG book included a non-"traditional" NPC or concept, or their MAGA peeners got in a twist. You're in luck, drama queens: the Taliban is hiring.

Thanks, Kaiu.  I'm still thinking about it, so will probably have to just fucking do it and see how it goes.

Intergalactic Threat, what is that from?

It is from the 1970's, when music was music and keyboards were played by people like Rick Wakeman

I have this Fantasy RPG ambient music playing in the background when running sessions sometimes.
