5e D&D - recommend me good adventures/campaigns

Hi folks

I may end up running a 5e D&D campaign for a small group (3 plus me probably)

I'm looking for mainstream D&D fantasyland (so like FR or Greyhawk - can be those or similar)

I don't have an enormous amount of prep time, so stuff I can run out of the box would be good. 1 is a newbie, the other 2 players enjoy acting as well as killing monsters and taking their stuff, so stuff with dialogue and some investigation would be great.

Please let me have your views on suitable material. Links would be ideal.

Thanks in advance.

Keep on the Borderlands, would be a good one to jump off with. If I remember correctly they did a 5e version. Caves of Chaos, I think. But the original would be super easy to convert.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen and to a lesser extent the second half of that pair is pretty good really. A good mix of both open and guided for differing styles of play. And a fairly brutal start off to remind the players this isnt 3 or 4e if they think they can charge everything gunz-a-blazin.

Any setting set from previous editions is usable as all you really need is the setting info. For example my 5e campaign is set in BX D&D's Karameikos, which is pretty darn minimalist. Another good one is the DAA Blackmoor series of modules as the first one is a great setting book. Should be up as a PDF on drivethru.

Most of the 5e campaigns to date have been decent. Tyranny of Dragons has a Dragonlance vibe and is linear. It needs some GM work to open it up and add player agency. Princes of the Apocalypse is probably the most mainstream D&D and sandboxy. It needs some GM work to add cohesion and motivation. It is also well placed to follow Lost Mines of Phandelver, which is a great introductory adventure. Out of the Abyss is both linear and sandboxy , but is set in the Underdark for the majority.

Not really. While fairly linear the PCs have alot of freedom in how they go about getting from A to B to C or even if they go to B at all.

I agree with that. Having played it twice now, having a GM willing to open it up and embrace that PC freedom is really helpful.

I REALLY liked Out Of The Abyss, it had a lot of places to be flexible.  Curse of Strahd is turning out to be decent.

I would have suggested Curse of Strahd as I really like it. But the poster asked for a more GH/FR bog standard fantasy.

My recommendation too. The Starter Set (Lost Mine of Phandelver) is decent and modestly priced compared to the campaign books; it's intended to take characters through level 5, and you could move into any of the campaign books from there.

The Butcher

Had I not a huge backlog of games to run I'd be rocking the original Temple of Elemental Evil, with an eye towards a Temple-Slavers-Giants-Drow mega-campaign. Or, more likely, a Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms sandbox.

I'll chime in for the Starter Set and Phandelver. It's pretty solid and will help you ease into the system. The other thing is learn to use the XP Threshold by Character Level table (DMG p.82 and probably in the SRD) and use it often. Keep in mind the Encounter Multipliers table on the same page. The latter table is a very handy way to avoid TPKing your players on their first foray with Goblins. :D The other reason I mention it is all the old school modules people are recommending. The nice thing about those is you can pretty much just use the monsters from the Monster Manual and not worry about converting. Hence the tables, which allows you to check and adjust the difficulty of those converted encounters.

Thanks all. I have heard a lot of good things about the starter set, so I think I will take the plunge. Unusual for a starter set in recent years :)

Still interested in any recommendations for 3rd party stuff.

If you go with Lost Mine of Phandelver, its worth noting that Prices of the Apocalypse is an easy follow on, in terms of location, level and theme.

Legacy of the Crystal Shard.

But you have to download the 5e stats for it sice it does not contain any stats.
