This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

"50 sHAdes of VORpal" on Kickstarter, D&D killer?

Benoist told me over Facebook that a buddy of his apparently got a hold of the person behind the Kickstarter and...

...it's an actual 15-year-old kid.

Unlikely as it sounds, I kind of hope it's true. But it's a win-win situation, really, since this thing's just as brilliant whether it's satirical or sincere.

If it's a 15 year old kid, he's pretty well versed in the meta of Kickstarter OSR projects.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

The Butcher

It's also unlikely, but not impossible, that it's a kid writing satire.

It's an unusual scene for a 15-year-old to immerse in to this degree (for perspective, a 15-year-old today would have been 4 or 5 when World of Warcraft came out). But kids do the darnedest things.

Emperor Norton

Yeah, even if its a 15 year old kid, there is still no way this isn't satire.

Also, if it is a 15 year old kid. I like this kid.

It's not a 15 year old...come on guys.  He'll "be in the bar" for a stretch goal? All the references to in-jokes that go back decades? Come on, clearly an adult.

JeremyR

It's not impossible that it's a kid, Mystery Science Theater 3000 was partially done by a high school kid.

But some of the references seem to be ones a kid would be unlikely to know.

Thanks to the internet, old references are preserved for anyone who wants to learn about them.

An adult (or fake ID) needs to be involved somehow in order for any money to actually be collected.

Quote from: Old Geezer;724252At some point it seems like D&D is going to disappear up its own ass.

(Of course, RPG.net regulars _can_ be 15 years old...)

Maybe we should invite him over here to the land of the free? :P

Since the mashed potatoes KS happened, I was feeling that this kind would just pop a day. I wished I would be wrong this time. My eyes cannot unseen what they saw. I hope that at least everybody will be able to get a good laugh from this.

Encouraging if true, since it's easier for an actual young person to come up with that flavor of off the wall.
And we are here as on a darkling plain  ~ Swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, ~ Where ignorant armies clash by night.
