This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Thanks to the latest issue of Freelance Traveller, I have discovered the Clement Sector. I have to say, I am finding this alternate Trav setting to be fantastic. It's so much more "Firefly" than the Third Imperium IMO. Grittier, more full of potential. To me, it helps that it is much smaller and more "local". The lack of aliens at the start.... the vast unexplored areas.... the fragmented nature of the settled worlds.... it's all just chock-full of adventure potential it seems to me. So, the purpose of the thread is both to share this discovery, and to solicit any experiences ya'all have had, if any, using Clement Sector or any of the otheer GKG products set in Clement.

I got to run some Traveller for the guys from Gypsy Knight Games at Connooga and I have to say that they are a bunch of great creative and smart guys. I've got four of their products so far and love them.

I'm loving the adventure potential of NOT having a massive over-arching interstellar polity. I'm loving the only interstellar polity being a fledgling state with serious issues, but tons of potential that's still in it's infancy. This is the kind of stuff that players can influence instead of being influenced by. Don't get me wrong, I love the 3rd Imp as an idea, but I'm loving the Clement Sector as a tool for gaming. To me it's like RPGing in the Star Trek Universe at the very start of the UFP, as created by JJ Abrams and Josh Whedon collaborating, maybe with some consulting input by George Martin :D It reminds me very strongly of the Age of Sail in space. I suppose that's not a coincidence.

The few times the Serenity ran into the Alliance was when Whedon needed a big bad or a reminder of the oppressive nature of that government.  I seem to recall some notes that the Blue Sun company was going to have a larger role in the second season, and the blue hands guys would be an ever-present danger as well, although we weren't given enough information to determine if they a part of the government or not.

If you simply ignore most of the Third Imperium, do you think a mid-bulk, Firefly class freighter could be just dropped into a Traveller game with much of the same feel as the series?

Are the Clement ships still 90% Hydrogen gascan?
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

With Clement, I don't need to ignore the third Imperium.

I think so, but the main difference is that the setting uses a different ftl drive called a "Zimm Drive", which can never go more than two hexes in a shot, so the largest drive any ship is going to have is jump 2. Plus, the drive doesn't on ships over 5000 tons, and is unreliable on anything over 2000 tons, so no Dreadnoughts zipping around the joint either. System ships can be built bigger, but nothing with ftl. Very few of the colonies have enough resources for large fleets yet, and none have enough to be spitting out Tigris' class set dressing. Everything is designed around player-scale stuff. I love it. Plenty of intrigue and mystery potential around, and loads of hooks and opportunity for getting PCs into the thick of things. Oh, and no aliens... yet.
