Title: 2017 Gaming Plans
Post by: K Peterson on December 28, 2016, 12:44:55 PM
It's a cliched forum topic this time of year... but what the hell.

What Rpg(s) are you planning to run in 2017? Or will continue to run into 2017? Or you'll be a player in?

I'm continuing to run Cthulhu by Gaslight, at least for the next month or two. We (re)started in September, and have played through a number of mysteries - surprisingly, with few casualties and asylum visits. It was a campaign that I started in mid-2015, shelved when that gaming group imploded, and resurrected for my current gaming group. (With one player from the original group). It's been a lot of fun, and it's a good group to play with.

I'd like to explore another campaign or two in the new year. It's been a while since I've run anything Scifi, and might dabble in a short 'belter' campaign, using Jovian Chronicles as the baseline mechanics. Otherwise, I might explore other eras of Cthulhu - running Cthulhu Dark Ages, or Dark Streets. I've been contemplating running either for ages.

I'm an occasional player in a friend's group, which is starting up a Gurps campaign this Friday. They've been playing through Modiphius' Mutant Chronicles for months, until the GM could no longer stand the system. He's rebooting a Dark*Matter campaign, using Gurps, which should be entertaining.

First, play in my wife's Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate campaign (http://storiescharactersandsystemsinrpgs.blogspot.bg/search/label/Wandering%20Heroes%20of%20Ogre%20Gate) as long as it lasts. Or I might make someone else run something else for me if it doesn't last as long as I expect it to:)!

Second, once this concludes, I'd probably run either an "authentic fairy tale" game for my group, probably using an OSR title or Mythras. Or I might do a "Fighting game tournament" campaign using either Mastercraft or Mythras;).
Horror might be mixed with both according to my tastes at the moment.
Or it might be an Earthdawn game to begin with:p.

And of course, my Tekumeli campaign would resume at some point next year, but I need some time as a player before that;). I need a break once in a while.

I'm running an OSR game and a freeform game on another forum. I plan on finishing both of them, if I can. I've decided to play at most one more PbP game, which means I'm only going to commit to another online game if I think it's going to be good.

Of course, if The Way of the Tiger RPG is published next year, as it should, odds are it would take priority over some of those other plans:D!

A hack of Fantasy AGE, because I like the Stunt and spell systems. I've already modded Microlite-20 down to a more B/X style curve, so I can use the monsters from it, and worked up a list of Ranked spells (a la FAGE). Ported over the Stunts as "Maneuvers" (tweaked a couple), created a Maneuvers list for Travel (pilfering Dungeon World/Freebooters), and then adapted a Race-as-Class system.

So, um, short answer...running my own hack in the same campaign world we've already built, and hoping like hell it works well.:-) (while making sure I take some of the better GMing techniques from Dungeon World, which, I believe has made my GMing better).

My big plan is to start an open table (http://thealexandrian.net/wordpress/38643/roleplaying-games/open-table-manifesto) group over the internet, so that we can get maximum participation, and include players in other states.

We'll see if it takes off or not. Details are to be determined. (System, setting, etc.)

Doing my first foray into virtual GMing.

Indulging myself with Savage Worlds and figuring out what I wanna hack/not hack.

Running a full-blown dedicated Sci-fi campaign that's not Star Wars.

Running Star Wars (FFG rules)

Running Savage Rifts

I'll continue running Stars Without Number until we get tired of it or someone does something stupid enough to TPK the group. No plans beyond that.

Continuing the Hyborian Age episodic campaign recently rebooted useing Barbarians of Lemuria. I am kind of split on if I should change system for variation, but I really want it to continue.

Hoping to finally end Keep on the Borderlands ( as a player) early next year.

Try to learn and at least run one adventure for Trail of Cthulhu

Learn The One Ring again and get a campaign going when the BOL campaign goes into the freezer.

I'm planning on kicking off 2017 with a new campaign using the Mythras (http://thedesignmechanism.com/products.php#!/Mythras-Core-Rules/c/2826223/offset=0&sort=normal) rules. I'm using The Lost City of Barakus (http://www.froggodgames.com/lost-lands-lost-city-barakus).

GM = Playtesting my own shiznack to ready the damn shiznack for Kickstarter. It's only been incubating for two decades. Maybe running the Modiphuckious playtest for Star Trek.

Player = maybe join a semi-regular something. Or just continue with convention one-shots. Who knows? I may be moving out of Cali in 2017, especially if I complete my current client project.

All the games I play/run have been on hiatus since November... hopefully those will start up again without losing too many folks (all but one are online and that's a common hazard).
So playing Mazes & Monsters, DCC and Magic World. Our Wednesday Traveller game is going to be pre-empted by some Holmes D&D.
As GM I'll be starting up my online Magic World campaign again... though I've got some ideas for one-shots and short campaigns I'd like to try.

D&D 5e for now, though I've been struggling to get folks to show up for some reason (granted, this particular week is bad). I might just start over from 1st level, I suspect pulling folks in at 6ish level might have been an issue.

Past that, I just bought Witcher 3, and there's a Conan board game still on the agenda...just as soon as I finish writing another book.

AD&D 1e. Same campaign I've been in on and off since '86. D&D 5e spinoff of the AD&D 1e game and a Star Wars game using D&D 5e. Not Ultramodern, none of the conversions, but D&D 5e.

I expect to keep playing in my friend Theo's tabletop D&D3.5 game each Sunday night as the unarmed, unarmoured, shirtless monk Balakalak.

And when the older child starts school in February, if not sooner, return to running the Billmarillion - Bill's wizard through his AD&D1e hexcrawl online each Wednesday morning.

I might be starting a B-tech campaign, but I am not sure.

We've a Marvel Advanced game in the wings at some point.  Hoping to get in some hot and juicy miniature gaming action in after a hiatus of forever- so G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. is at the forefront and maybe even Brink of Battle if we're up for it.

Continue my Leagues of Adventure/Gothic Horror campaign, start up a D&D5e for my twins, continue my solo Symbaroum campaign, check out the Conan boardgame, drag up Descent 1st Ed. for the annual Road to Legend play through, finish my 2004 Falujah table for miniatures skirmish oh! and figure out how to fit in Conan Modiphius when the stuff starts rolling in after the first of the year.

And then contend with the nagging desire to strike up something Cthulhu, run a little zombie apocalypse (maybe FFG End of the World), and deal with the wife's request to run a 30s Noir Detective game for her.

Too many games, too little... bleh, that saying gets old, we need to come up with something else to express our frustration.

I really want to do some SF, but I can't realistically start another game. I'll have to wind one of my existing games down.

Schedule pressures are forcing me to bow out of the high level 3.5 game (soon to be replaced with a Pathfinders Strange Aeons game, which I was looking forward to.)

Both my Night's Black Agents game and Mutants & Masterminds games are coming to an end of published adventures I was running.

NBA should segue into the Dracula Dossier interactive campaign, which will probably take me through the spring.

Meanwhile, I have no actual ready-to-run content for Mutants & Masterminds, though some of the campaign material has me excited, mainly from Threat Report. I'm hoping to make Dollface a central foil for my PCs.

Pathfinder is only monthly, so that should last the rest of the year.

Well, the GM that runs the Mutants & Masterminds 3E and ICONS campaigns I virtually play put them on hiatus for a couple of weeks back in September while she moved.  A few weeks later in October, she showed up and said that she was still in the process of moving, and hoped to get the games going again soon.  Then she disappeared.  So, I'm assuming our group is now without a GM and since none of the rest of us want to GM, well...

Looks like I'll be spending 2017 looking for a new virtual play group.  I would really like to play M-Space and try out the new Villains & Vigilantes when the new edition comes out, but it's been a really long while since I last GMed and I don't know if I'd be able to find a virtual play group that would be interested in playing either, so more than likely I'll just go back to playing M&M 3E or ICONS.  Or maybe Mongoose Traveller 2E.

GMing:
Keep running Mythras Conan.
Once I get the Savage Rifts books, combine those with Interface Zero, Sci-Fi Companion, etc and begin construction of Savage 40k.

Playing:
Mythras fantasy campaign
OSR-style homebrew fantasy campaign
Maybe Delta Green

All the other things I kid myself into thinking I'm going to have time for I will abstain from listing, I'll get too pissed knowing I probably won't get to them.

Currently have a D6 Star Wars campaign fermenting in my head... It's going to be a Rebellion Era Spec Ops campaign. The kicker is that their team is designated Spec Ops 4 - a number which is considered unlucky by Zelosians (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Zelosian) and lucky by Orfites (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Orfite). The team's going to wind up with a Zelosian technician (Druune Melor) and an Orfite medic (Porgo Renn) as occasional comic relief. Hopefully I'll be able to start at the FLGS and run it at least one Sunday a month with some asynchronous gaming on Roll20.

I am preparing to run Maze of the Blue Medusa using Swords & Wizardry rules on Roll20.  I expect that'll be the dominant game of the year.

Aside from that, since this is a New Year's Resolution sort of thread, I'd really like to actually play some games in person.  I have some stage fright there that has prevented me from going to my FLGS much, but I'm going to try to get over that and get some extra games in on the weekend.

My Hackmaster game has been running for about 14 months now, and probably has about the same amount of time left to run, so it should take me all the way through 2017.

I'm also planning to start a concurrent Blades in the Dark game in February.

Hopefully I'll also run a bit of Battlestations here and there, which nearly counts as an RPG.

As a GM: I will be resuming my Fantasy Craft campaign based on my homebrew setting from my novels on February 4th. I've been running it for 2 and a half years thus far and it doesn't look to be stopping anytime soon.

As a Player: Continuing to play in a DnD 5e group and play in a couple of Fantasy Craft adventures my assistant GM has planned for the 7th and 21st. He's got this wacko idea of what he calls Inception Craft. Basically our characters from our main campaign play a tabletop RPG game with their own characters lol. We'll see how that goes.

The club where I mainly game at shut at the very end of the year - the club owner simply said that '2016 was a year where everything died, so the club could die too' - which was a shame as we had just started a new Traveller game, and I was playing in a D&D campaign too. I'm not sure I can commit to running a game through the distances needed to travel to people's houses (I had to travel a fair bit to the club). So, I may have to aim for something more localised and we shall see what I come up with. I can't really commit as much to the Adventurer's League, which I run D&D games for either.

I generally aim for Traveller as my go-to game, although I may do CoC or WoD (Mage) and Mythras as the other options to run. I'll play in whatever, starting with a Con in January, and most likely D&D at some point.

In other purchases, I'm looking forward to receiving Paranoia, Puppetland, Pendragon, Prince Valiant, Mindjammer, Kult, Unknown Armies, Aquelarre, Delta Green, Deadlands, Changeling: The Dreaming 20th, Wraith: The Oblivion 20th.........all from Kickstarters. That should keep me busy, although I still have an interest in some new games - maybe new The Onyx Path lines for Scion and Trinity Continuum. Maybe the new RuneQuest and other Chaosium news. Oh, and I'll get everything for Mongoose's Traveller and some stuff for The Design Mechanism's Mythras.

Well, as much as I like the game's fluff (there are some really neat locations and ideas), I was really disappointed in the equipment lists and general theme of "basically, this is yet ANOTHER fantasy setting except that the occasional animal has robot parts and magic items are actually pieces of forgotten technology".

My plan is to re-skin it back to being actual sci-fi: the party will have a space ship and will explore new worlds. The cultures, locations and settings described on future earth are so bizarre and weird that I'll just be transplanting them onto other planets (generated through random charts from Stars Without Number). The whole "Nano" thing will be across the galaxy, not just on Earth.

I mean, it won't be full-on Star Trek or Traveller: a bit more on the Star Wars side of things where melee combat with lazer swords is still a viable tactic. But I just love the idea of exploring worlds and finding societies that were spawned from colonial ships from Earth ages ago (thanks to Relativity, some of these colonies have only been around a few thousand years compared to Earth's MILLIONS).

I've considered using something like Numenara refluffed to something like a cross between Mobius' Arzach and Moorcock's Dancer's at the End of Time. I guess since Arzach was the inspiration of the Taarna sequence in the Heavy Metal movie, that could be used as well. Of course at that point I don't know how much of the Cypher system I'd actually want to use. Maybe importing Cyphers into DCC, some other OSR or even 5e.

Call of Cthulhu (probably Beyond the Mountains of Madness)

My 2016 had more playing (3 consistent 5e campaigns) and less running (3 different weekend one shots - Dungeon World Servants of the Cinder Queen and Lair of the Unknown, and 5e Phandelver) than I expected.

For 2017, one of the 5e campaigns will likely fade away. My remote gaming group have two in-person weekend sessions on the calendar for which I'll run DCC - Sailors on the Starless Sea and Doom of the Savage Kings, and maybe try to pitch Maze of the Blue Medusa as a remote play long term follow on.

I have "big plans" for a Primeval Thule campaign with the stock Lovecraft stuff replaced with stuff I developed using Silent Legions ( that was a lot of fun). I got PT for 5e through the Kickstarter, so was somewhat inclined to use 5e for that, but I find it really hard to fit the feel I want to 5e.  In the current iteration its human, non-caster only for the PCs aft first. I'm somewhat manic-depressive about this project and may just ditch 5e for it entirely.

The last few years have seen a drought in sci-fi games, so I'd like to rectify that, but don't have any specific plans yet.

I may have the opportunity to play Bookhounds of London in some form, which would be cool if it comes together.

Putting the final touches on using Savage Worlds to play a Star Wars game set in the WEG Tapani Sector that I have updated to be in the Force Awakens timeline.  The nobles are split between backing the First Order, backing the Republic, and trying to stay neutral.

There's a very good chance that none of my current games (the original Dark Albion campaign, the Wild West campaign, DCC, or my local-convention pick-up Cults of Chaos campaign) will end this year. The last of these could disappear, in theory, if there were no more local cons, or if I couldn't attend them for scheduling reasons at all. The original Dark Albion campaign MIGHT end if the Players really pick up the pace, but they don't seem in any hurry to do so at the present time.  Just so you know, the newest of the three steady games is the Wild West game, which has been going for a year of fortnightly play so far.  The oldest is the Dark Albion campaign which is on it's sixth year now if I'm not mistaken.

Quote from: Simlasa;937760By 'virtual play' do you mean online? 'Cause I'd happily play in either of those.

Is M-Space basically Sci-fi RQ6? That sorta piques my interest.

I ran into living breathing players who live within walking distance and met them at a game store which is also within walking distance (though unfortunately focuses on card and board games) so I may have a new group to run 5e for, who may be okay with me running it on my mashup world Erthmyst (http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp233/KrimsonGray/Campaign%20Cartographer/Erthmyst2_zpsx4yg7oim.png). They are also interested in FFG Star Wars, which may be my impetus to actually buy Edge of Empire and the fancy dice.

It's science-fiction Mythras / RuneQuest 6 light, I believe.  It's based on the Mythras Imperative rules set.

Quote from: Necrozius;938109I really hope so. I'm getting my dad to play (to keep him busy in his retirement). He's a massive Asimov and Clarke fan, so I'm hoping to tap into that and let him explore some of the themes that he likes from those authors. He's also the person who introduced me to the Hero Quest board game, the artist Moebius and Heavy Metal magazine. :)

Gaming with your dad? That's awesome! As far as the "lack of sci-fi" in Numenera, I think I may be one of the only people who doesn't feel it's "D&D with the serial numbers filed off. I just visualize it...not that. :D I get why people can, it's just my mind naturally gravitates to the science-fantasy it's supposed to be. Perhaps I've been away from D&D too long? Who knows? That said, I've glanced at Kevin Crawford's games (I have Godbound), some threads about his other games and samples, so I can totally see inserting some of them into Numenera, which made me comment on how cool such GM tools would be. I've been looking at Stars Without Number for a while and maybe your idea is a reason to get it. So thank you for that.

At any rate, I hope your hybrid hits the bullseye and you and your dad have a great game.
