This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Or one large strong retainer carrying the magic-user around. Someone did that in my campaign once.

"Who run Bartertown?  MasterBlaster run Bartertown!"

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the inspiration.

While going through some old Villains & Vigilantes material I came across one from back in the mid 80s in two of their modules.

One is a villain who lost an arm in the war and was saved and trained by monks. Can fire ricocheting energy balls at opponents. Oddly named "Slim". wha?

The other is Warwagon, a vigilante who was crippled by a drunk driver and now hunts drunk drivers in a armoured and armed wheelchair. Punisher in a wheelchair.

As said. Superhero settings are perfect for handicapped adventurers and villains of all sorts.

I wonder if Woke-campaigns occasionally find potions of Insulin and Gluten-free Iron Rations as treasure?

If I stop replying, it either means I've lost interest in the topic or think further replies are pointless.  I don't need the last word, it's all yours.

There was a short-lived TV series called 'MANTIS' which involved a crippled hero using an exoskeletal suit to fight crime. I'm sure some of the older posters remember it.

Games set in modern times and onward, particularly superhero-genre settings, have less problem with this because invariably either (a) the character has some ability that completely counterbalances their disadvantages (Professor X and Daredevil, for example), or (b) the character's gear compensates for it (the aforementioned MANTIS, or Iron Man).

I touched on this in this and similar threads.

Well before Mantis there was Exo-Man. About a researcher who is crippled by criminals and develops a power suit to combat them, allowing him to walk. The Six-Million Dollar Man and its spin offs are another example. Robocop as well.

Well before that there was an old murder mystery movie about a man who had through meditation developed the ability to literally will new legs into existence to replace his lost ones and take revenge.

Lost my temper a bit after engaging in pointless discussion about combat wheel-chairs. Got called ableist a couple times, that was cool.

When an sjw starts calling you ableist, sexist, racist, or one of the many ***phobics they throw around, it means they have no logical points to make and just hit their default insult button.

Greetings!

You did well, Trinculoidead!

Honestly, though, if you encounter someone where including a wheelchair-bound character in a adventuring group in a fantasy D&D game--is actually considered a debate--just ignore them or exclude them entirely. They are obviously deranged, mentally-ill morons. Wheelchair-bound disabled characters are utterly unsuitable to be adventurers. They are helpless, crippled fucks that would be easily slaughtered by enemies or eaten by monsters--and furthermore, their crippling disabilities also endangers other members of the team. Other members of the team need to devote extra effort, attention, and resources into picking up the slack for the wheelchair-bound jackass who can't do their job and carry their weight as a fully-functional, independent member of the adventuring team. The adventuring team must be composed of highly-skilled, competent, fully-independent and functioning members. Cripples, the disabled, weaklings, incompetent losers, and other dysfunctional morons need not apply. Such people need to stay home, safe on the farm, or in whatever place that caters to the "special needs" community--not out in the dangerous world pursuing delusions that they are as capable and functional as a normal person.

The deeper truth is at the end of the day, adventurers may begin relatively "normal" or "average"--but they need to be fully functional and capable, and in many cases must perform at an extraordinary level of competence in order to overcome the many dangerous obstacles and challenges faced on an adventuring career.

Such careers are simply not suitable for disabled people where many normal physical activities are themselves an extraordinary challenge or impossible. The moron activists that push for this nonsense being included in the game are mentally-ill jackasses. Their entire argument is absurd, and emotional circle-jerking.

What bothers me is how they expect everything and anything to be catered around the character either in a wheelchair or another similar disability.

- No rough terrain, stairs or ladders. Every and any adventuring area must have wheelchair accessible ramps

- Somehow evil, intelligent creatures will somehow never target the character first

- The sheer ego and entitlement of expecting every and any player to want to help the character with a disability even if it puts said character at risk

If one does not give into their entitled demands then everyone and anyone is an abelist.

What does piss me off is the " just because you can cure your disability does not mean the character would do so". Bullshit...utter complete bullshit that kind of toxic insane garbage comes from SJW players who do not have any form of disability. That's the only explanation because if they suddenly lost their sight you can bet they would want to see again. I wear glasses and without them while not blind I have trouble seeing why the fuck would I want to play a blind character unless it was by personal choice.

If one day an alien race would arrive and ask if anyone with a disability would want to be cured no strings attached you can bet most if not all at least 99% would say yes. None of this "yeah I want to remain blind because of reasons and feels" trash.

Ah, but all of that is accounted for in the wheelchair's magical abilities. It can levitate! It gives attacks! It's almost immune to damage!

If this was a more conventional magic item it would be rejected on the grounds of being overpowered, especially for its price (100gp). But because it brings 'representation', it's celebrated. Which is even more bizarre: who the hell wants to play someone stuck in a wheelchair?

Someone suggested this and I have to agree: this is about someone's creepy fetish for disabled people.

1: In a way you answer your own question. Some are being brainwashed into thinking this is a great idea. "You are representing the oppresededed poor helpless handicapped who are suffering systemic stockholm syndrom and too dumb to know they should not be happy. We must help them by making them miserable and making a mockery of being handicapped by taking away all challenges of being handicapped!"

2: Not true (usually) See my thread on this for the myriad reasons why either a handicapped person would want to play a handicapped character, or a normal person would want to.

None of which these SJWs are doing. Its just a step in their agenda. Rile up another group and feed off it like parasites. Representation as quota. Representation as instigation. Representation as oppression. Representation as indoctrination into the SJW cult.

Seen it all before in TWO past iterations. This time its just exponentially more pervasive and potentially damaging.

rofl, yeah, pour one out for the homie.

Thanks Shark, disabled people aren't necessarily lumped in with "incompetent morons", but yeah it's a waste of time to argue with someone who is too charged about a certain set of ideas.

That 5E or Paizo style wheelchair will not see any action at my tables or if it does the person using an upgraded one is a prime target. You think an intelligent evil monster like a Drow or Giant is going to ignore a flying wheelchair...good luck.

The thing is the SJWs like linking to a guy who is lifting a wheel chair easily up a bunch of stairs as their primary counter argument except the person in the video is highly trained and looks to be in peak physical shape .How many people in wheelchairs are representative of that guy. Not to mention they act like somehow the enemy is not going to target the player while carrying and lugging the wheelchair up the stairs. The Reddit thread is the shits because somehow a person with legs and one in  wheelchair are the same. If a wall has holes and handholds I can try and climb it. Unfortunately the person in the wheelchair is most likely shit out of luck. Somehow in their twisted SJWs minds functioning legs and a wheelchair are the same
