White Men Can't Jump

Is there a RPG that has the players as hustlers? That copies sport games and is driven by "gaming" skill and gambling prizes?

And if not, what would be a good existing system to do this with?

What about that indie-ish boxing game... Contenders, I think it's called?
That might do the trick. Though I don't think it has the hustling angle, I'm not sure how that would work.

Dr Rotwang!

I don't think there's a whole RPG dedicated to it, as it seems rather narrow a focus (yes, even for an RPG).  That stated, it'd be pretty easy work to set up a campaign of that stripe, in any setting where it might fit and not seem...I dunno, anachronistic or just out-of-place.

I immediately think of a cyberpunk game, maybe, or Transhuman Space.  Most likely I see it being a light-hearted contemporary game.  Maybe duelist hustlers in Castle Falkenstein?

As for rules, I don't think anything specific might be necessary. Mechanically, any game that lets you deceive an NPC (which is most of 'em) would do the trick; however, "hustling" might get pretty repetitive if you break it down too fine.

I see it being a springboard for other adventures, something a little broader, and not as an ongoing focus, for some reason.  Sure, lots of games churn combat over and over, and why is THAT any different?  I dunno, man.  Thought experiment for the reader.

I gotta agree with Dr. Rotwang. It would definitely be a spring board to adventure or go hand in hand with it. Like in King Pin, and The Big Lebowski. Theres lots of bowling, but theres lots of other things going on too. I really like the idea of running the Big Lebowski as an RPG. The characters have wacky adventures. If things run down, or come to a conclusion. Fuck it lets go bowling Dude. Or to push the story along if things get bogged down. Hey you better get that new carpet quick. We got the league semi finals tonight.

Oh yeah.  And you'd gain Hero Points, or whatever you want to call them, by narrating dream sequences.

That was the idea basicly.  Instead of "and they fight", it would be "and they play".

Gambling on the side gives hooks for adventures.

Just seems like a lot of people like sports but, it is under represented in RPGs.

Some sports would be kind of hard to repesent in an RPG. Stuff like bowling and boxing are fairly easy no brainers. But take baseball for example each team has at least what ten players. I find you have 3-6 people typically in a game group so at least 4 NPC's just on your team. Then you have to have a whole team of NPC's. So do you try to play out the game. Or maybe just have a way to determine who wins the games. Then the consequence's of winning or losing. This would obviously have to be the focus of the game. If playing a big team sport. Otherwise why would you go through all the trouble of dealing with it. Theres also the fear that it could get a little repetitive. But guess that could be said of any game with combat too. So I guess it may just be a bias most of us just automatically insert.

Using a game system like Savage Worlds (with mook rules), it would not seem that hard to do baseball. For example:
Assign positions of Infield, Outfield, Pitcher, Catcher, Batter, Runner.
Only where the ball is at matters. except for a steal attempt.
Does the pitcher throw a strike?
Does the pitcher get a bonus?
Does the batter hit it? (opposed roll) if so how well?
Does the batter get a bonus?
Is it caught, if so was it a flyball?
Is it thrown, if so was it on target?
Is a throw caught?
Does the runner beat the tag?  (opposed roll)
Does the runner get a bonus for speed?

Actually I was thinking of team games with flexable team sizes like basketball or soccer.

Gee, that doesnt seem hard at all  ;)  Seriously though. How would you manage some of that. Would you use the combat system for hitting and throwing? How would you work catching. Does the system have rules for catching. Would that be covered by the skill of baseball in the game. Would you have to fabricate rules. When hitting, how do you determine where the ball goes. Do you hit an infield single, a pop fly to left, or a long bomb to right? Would any of that even matter? I guess it depends on how complicated you want to make it. I think your takeing a more rules light approach. When I think about it, I think I'm over thinking it a little.:duh:

You could abstract the whole sporting event, and narrow it down to one or two rolls, modified by PC abilities. "Roll to see how good an offensive game your team plays this inning -- DM +2 for your batting skill.  You do that, I'm gona roll their defense, and remember they're fielding Weisenheimer, who gives them a +3 DM from his catching skill.  High roll wins, and if you beat it by 2, you score extra runs."

Or whatever, me no sports good.

That kinda was the idea for throwing this up. Sports are big. Why no sport RPGs? Is it too hard to model or just not fun when you do?
Is it reasonable to consider playing a Sports based RPG?

Is it to hard to model or just not fun when you do? I think it definitely can be done. If you make it to easy then its just a secondary part. If it is to complex it shy people away. Either way I think it would take a group thats really in to it. I dont nessisarily think its something for the casual player. But it definitely can be done. I seem to remember in the BESM (2nd ed) book, it talking about running a sports campaign. As there are a bunch of sports oriented manga/anime. I'll have to take a look when I get home from work.
