Warhammer, need ideas for a themed Empire army.

Any one have any ideas for neat themes for an empire army? I had a couple in mind but nothing is really grabbing me.

I was thinking I could do a mercenary army based around knights who were the youngest sons from large noble families. A Marienburg army, or a bandit army based around free company.

I have a couple of boxes of state troops, a box of free company, a box of knights, and some hand-gunners. I just can't get motivated to assemble and paint them and I thought having a cool theme would help.

I have no idea what the current rules allow. I do like lots of infantry and militia, with maybe one unit of knights and a unit of artillery.

Marienburg is a solid choice, their is a lot of material out their for it (along with some mad forge world goodies if you have money to burn).

Personally I would be tempted to do a Border Prince expeditionary force, essentially a Empire Noble looking to grab some turf south of the mountains.

I always wanted to have a custom army done based on ragtag veterans of the Chaos wars. AKA, guys who have been on Crusade too long and came back with mishmash of gear from the armies they conquered, weird trophies, and a look that clearly said "Dirty Dozen" and "Bad Company".

Hmm I am kinda digging the idea of a border prince or veterans of chaos wars theme.
A rag tag crusader army would give me an excuse to have all sorts of bits and bobbles. I could do free company with mixed bits from state troops and just run them as state troops to get ragged look.

My own army is a cavalry army based in Wissenland.  Spent 400 of 2000 pts on Wizards, then 2 units of Pistoliers and 1 unit of Outriders.  1 large unit of Knight completes my cavalry contingent (25 horses at 2000).

I do have three large infantry units:  spearmen, halberdiers and swordsmen.  Halberdiers should be in your army, even if it's only one unit, for flavor - they are the most common of Imperial troops, and some of my units are actually town guard.

From Nuln, I have a great cannon and two units of handgunners.

My advice - pick a province first.

I was planning to do a Sylvana Crusade army before the local scene imploded.

A General with a Runeblade and a lvl4 Lighte Wizard with a few Warrior Priests and Witch Hunters running around with blocks of Swordsmen, Handgunners and Raven Knights.

Throw in some Greatswords as the General's bodyguard, some cannon and a Steam Tank for giggles and you're good to go.
