This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

[WoW] Does anyone still play this?

Yes, I am late to the party. WoW's release and most of its life cycle coincided with the beginning my own very time-demanding graduate education. I played a trial account (of the old, 10-day sort) in 2007 and loved it, but didn't have the courage to commit to a subscription.

It was the October 2011 Brazilian release, complete with promotional prices and hilarious translation, that sealed the deal. I broke down, bought in and started a character in the main Brazilian server and played for a few months; because my play time is limited I have yet to reach the level cap. In the last few months my wife became interested, and opened up an account of her own; I created a new character to level up with her and we're having a blast.

Compared to my limited experience in 2007, I see a lot of improvements. The Dungeon Finder facilitates PUGing and opens up additional contents for casual players like myself (PUGing's still a Russian rolette, though, you can land with some great people or with a bunch of assholes. C'est la vie). The revised quest chains have more backstory and continuity to them, easing the "grindy" feel somewhat. Oh, and I still suck at PvP, but capture-the-flag battlegrounds are a lot of fun.

My original character is a Druid, which is a one-man party really, but I really enjoyed tanking dungeons. Right now I'm playing a Warlock, a class I chose based exclusively on style and fluff, and even though the WoW forums seem to be teeming with butthurt over the serial nerfs the class has been getting since WotLK, I am still enjoying myself immensely, playing a rotting zombie that summons demons and steals people's souls. When I cap the Warlock, I might try another tank, like a Death Knight, or a Paladin (which people assure me is the absolute best tank in WoW right now), or maybe even the much-maligned Warrior.

Anyone else around here still playing (and enjoying) WoW?

I still play, and have been since 2009.

My big beef with WoW has been the lack of storyline continuity, especially since the Cataclysm-revised Old World didn't extend through the BC and Wrath areas.  What ends up happening is that you're effectively sent back in time once you reach L60.  Since Blizz isn't planning on fixing this, the BC zones will be older than the vanilla Old World was when Mists of Pandaria drops.  My opinion is that once you committed yourself to revising old content, you have to keep it up or you end up in a worse mess than before.

People used to joke that you could go see Tirion in Eastern Plaguelands and then go visit him in Northrend, but now they've got the same problem as before but with even more people.  Garrosh may be the Warchief, but you can still go check him out in Warsong Hold in the Borean Tundra.  Bran Bronzebeard pops up in both Uldum and Storm Peaks, while Magni is still alive and well when he visits Muradin in Storm Peaks.

Story issues aside, WoW works because it is dependable.  It has that critical mass you need to keep things going, but I wonder at how many new subs they're taking in.  The cost to start the game from scratch isn't getting lower, and when Mists drops a title like The Old Republic will look a lot cheaper by comparision.

still play, and still mostly happy with it.  have only one 85 character, and don't do raids, guilds (aside from personal ones for storage space), or dungeons (unless either soloable, or for holiday bosses).  currently levelling a BE DK (77 now) and having a neat time seeing the horde side of things, my main being a NE warrior.

one problem i have with the game currently is that levelling is too fast.  frequently you level out of a zone before finishing most of the questlines, and that's with the rest xp bonus.  add in heirlooms and/or guild xp bonuses, and it's just crazy fast.  but some folks want to race to the "endgame" as opposed to enjoying the ride, i guess.

looking forward to the new expansion, too.  more fishing & cooking fun!  (yes, i'm a professions/sec. skills addict)

I never started playing, but I can't let the thread pass without interjecting:

LEEEEROYYY JENNNNKINS!

(at least I have chicken...)
The problem is not that power corrupts, but that the corruptible are irresistibly drawn to the pursuit of power. Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.
