Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning

I've been meaning to try the free trial forever, and yesterday I finally did it.

With the release of WoW: Cataclysm, I was expecting a "ghost town" but I managed to PUG for the three first Order-side PQs in the Volkmar server.

It's been two years since I've last played WoW, and then only the free trial, but I find that the WAR starting areas compare favorably to the WoW starting areas. Fetch quests and kill quests are much, much less annoying. Public quests are a lot of fun, and it feels awesome to bring down a giant when you're level 3!

And of course, I'm a sucker for the Warhammer Fantasy setting (even if the MMO's take feels much closer to the GW miniatures game, than to the tabletop RPG I know and love).

Of course, it's very unlikely that I'll ever upgrade my account because (1) WoW offers me a much bigger world to explore, and (2) none of my friends are playing it. Network externalities and all. :(

Pity, that, because so far I really like what I see.

Anyone else playing/played it?

Ghost Whistler

So the game survived the Great Billing Fiasco!

I'd like to try it but there's no way this pc will run it.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I played it before the tomb kings expansion, so I can only go on what it was like then. Play was pretty good overall, PvP scenarios were a blast. Open-world PvP meant visiting the RvR areas but those were usually busy. The crafting systems left a lot to be desired, but with a name like WAR you kind of know where the focus was.

My major complaint was endgame. Raiding the opposing capitals was a one-sided affair depending on server balance, and in those days it was really bad. In scenarios, 31-40 was a tier and there was no regard for 40s who also had a bunch of RvR ranks in addition to being level capped. Dunno if they at least made 40 its own tier yet or not, but it seemed a huge imbalance then.

I played it too....it's definitely fun for a month or two, but there's no end game, and the PQs start to get rather lonely as so few people try to do them, unlike the low level PQs where newcomers will come in and take a few swings with you.

A nice education blog.

Isnt the endgame the same as dark ages of camelot? ie pvp.

Played it to death with friendlies, but drifted away (due to baby coming along). Open Realm vs Realm was lots of fun, even up to level 40. Got a lot better once the servers all consolidated. We had a friendly rivalry with a Singapore PvP guild  (similar timezone to Australia) and that was great fun to battle against.

Overall I liked it, story was awesome. Would probably still be playing with wife if our priorities hadn't significantly changed :)

I just wish they really went free to play like DDO or LoTR.  Their endless trial is a step in the right direction but I think they'll have to do more to keep up the subscriber rate.

I agree with you, and I would love to see it happen.

Keep on wishing. According to the Producer's letter back in August, they specifically squashed the rumor that they may go f2p. Hopefully they will reconsider, what with all the other MMOs going the f2p route.

I predict If they don't go F2P then they'll just go.

Totally in agreement with that. I hope they reconsider the f2p option.
