This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: King of Old School;524448Mechaton is the only Vincent Baker game I can actually stomach.  It's not my favourite mecha game of all time, and like most Baker games it uses waaay too many dice, but it's fun enough.  Plus, Legos are super nifty.

Jeff37923, did you bitch like this when Heavy Gear was released?  Jovian Chronicles?  No?  Then why the fuck are you whining like a little bitch now?  It's not like Mechaton is "Mekton with rules for using Lego minis," it's a completely different mecha minis game (it's not even an RPG for fuck's sakes) that happens to be anime inspired.  Do you piss and moan every time a new game in an already-done genre is released?

It's certainly true that Vincent Baker has a cult-like following, but it's obviously equally true that Vincent Baker also has a little chorus of whining cunts following him around, ready to bitch about anything he does no matter how innocuous or inoffensive.

KoOS

Go fuck yourself, the main selling point for Vince Baker's KIckstarter project is not the rules but the LEGO mech designs - so it isn't like he is a genius game designer here. Especially not with the "doomsday clock" rule he referenced.

And as far as Janus Publications go (who originally published Jovian Chronicles ), Jovian Chronicles was originally a licensed campaign setting for Mekton II that came out in 1987 and whose success (along with that of the Mekton II centric Mecha Press magazine) had allowed the financial foundation to be established for them to reincorporate as Dream Pod 9 and put out their own SilCore version of Jovian Chronicles and Heavy Gear. So, no, I didn't bitch when it first came out.

I can also say that I am unafraid of being branded one of a "chorus of whining cunts" because a game designer's reputation does not preclude them from criticism.
"Meh."

the only thing offensive about this to me is the fact that LEGO continues to sell exorbitantly high-priced movie tie-in sets, games that should have used mini-figs instead of micro-figs (staring at you, Heroica...), and it takes enthusiasts and hobbyists to do anything cool.

Quote from: Peregrin;524381Penny-Arcade name-dropped it (along with Kotaku) and it got a decent push from that.

Got it in one.

Free media and spiffy LEGO constructs designed by someone else always help (and damn, those are some sweet little mechs... wish I had those when I had my childhood LEGO set).

Quote from: Imperator;524419I'm not interested at all in this game, but again, if he can sell it, more power to him. Variety is good.

Agreed. Perhaps he will stop making "products" about raping dead boys and focus on actual games with good rules that can be played and enjoyed by mentally balanced people. Win-Win for everyone! :D

By the way, if you are interested in a truly good Kickstarter game project, you should definitely check Wasteland 2.

Someone really ought to start some kind of betting pool, maybe on RPGnet or someplace, to put money on how many posts pass between the first mention of Vincent Baker's name at this site and the inevitable reference to neck-raping.

In this case it probably doesn't count because I have no beef with story games, but I cannot resist a cheap shot. Ever. Truthfully, i couldn't even rememebr if he was the Poisin'd guy. a better pool might be to see how many posts i can go without being an asshole. The average is 2. Or we could pool how many posts we have here in a story game thread before you come in and talk to everyone like you're their mom.

Well, JongWK beat you to the punch by a couple of posts. And I am not everyone's mom, I am the crotchety old elf, telling you what to do. Look at my Avatar and see.

I believe that nobody has gone for the term "storywargame" yet, so I'd like to be the first to open up that particular avenue of trolling.

Well done! I will preemptively coin the term storystory in case Vincent Baker publishes any piece of fiction. I'm preemptively offended too.

Quote from: jeff37923;524392So why can't you do this with LEGOs and Mekton?

Because that would be a completely different game with the only point of commonality being that it involves mecha?

Was that meant to be a trick question of some sort?
