Video Games: What are you playing?

I just started playing Fallout 76 as it is free (somehow, not sure). It is a pretty terrible RPG as the multiplayer aspect means that nothing you can do can possibly affect the game word. All your actions result in are faction affinity which only affects what stuff you can buy from them (unless you go all agro and turn them into enemies). The game is super feminine and almost every faction is run by women. Their is only one faction run by a man and a female NPC literally says "we just let him think he's in charge". Oi

Anyway, because the game is so old there is a strange aspect that there are all these 500+ level characters that can vaporize any enemy is seconds. So you'll be sneaking up on a Raider outpost and some random dude will just fly in (all high level characters have jump packs), kill them all, and be gone before you can even see his name.

On the plus side, the player base is always nice and will eagerly try to help low level characters (sometimes being annoying about it) and will give you any resource you ask for. And the game is still being updated, with new content coming next week.

Lethal Company. It is 100% a low-level dungeon crawl in space. Multiplayer only, so friends are good but the community is also pretty chill.
The worms crawl in and the worms crawl out
The ones that crawl in are lean and thin
The ones that crawl out are fat and stout
Your eyes fall in and your teeth fall out
Your brains come tumbling down your snout
Be merry my friends
Be merry

The trailer for the new Indiana Jones game was encouraging.

1937, so no decrepit Indy. Troy Baker doing a fine impression of Harrison Ford. Graphics are nice. First and third person. Raiders March. Hot, throbbing bullwhip-on-Nazi action.

I know a lot of unfortunate stuff can be revealed between now and when the game releases, but it looks good so far. Indiana Jones needs a win (which is not a phrase I thought I would ever have to say).

I quit playing about the third time that I was randomly logged into a server where someone had their camp where mine was and I had to find a new location and rebuild it.  At last there are NPCs now.  When I was playing, there weren't any beyond a few robots.  The only other people were other players.

I'm replaying Pillars of Eternity and might finally finish it this time. Then move unto Pathfinder:Kingmaker maybe.

Still unsure if I want to play Disco Elysium, lots of people love it but my brief play of intro made game feel "pretencious". Might be because of my stat choices back then.

Been playing a lot of Genshin Impact and Approaching Infinity lately, I guess I like the grind for grin's sake.  Also playing, some Girl Genius: Adventures in Castle Heterodyne.

On the bright side, GI does have some pretty graphics and lots of story.  And, AI is great procedural fun and play nice when the internet fails (which sadly happened too freaking often last week.)

My son says that I should revisit Warframe since some of the new content is pretty nice.

I spent around $80 to get the new expansion for Final Fantasy XIV and reactivate my account.  So, naturally, I have barely played it and am spending most of my time playing Path of Exiles.

So I keep coming back to this game yearly at least. It was one of my favorites as a young teenager aged 12 when it first came out. As a lover of military science fiction (which I know is going to cause some eyerolls because true intellectuals "know" that Starship Troopers is heckin gross and fascist) I keep coming back to good old Quake 4 and it's campaign. I love it. It has a couple interesting twists in the middle of it that help make the gameplay and story even more fun.

Concurrent with my yearly playthrough someone started doing Quake lore videos which are highly polished and intriguing. These videos do an excellent job of piecing together the lore for all 6 Quake games. Quake 1,2,3,4, Enemy Territory, and Champions and tying that into Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos. Especially the Dreamlands. It puts the games into a cohesive timeline. Which made my playthrough feel all the more richer.

I know the idea of Quake having lore at all and people being interested in it might seem strange. So give the videos a look if you don't believe me.

After years of playing Eve Online solo, (with a short stint in the rpg.net corp) I joined Brave* and moved down to nullsec*. I was curious and have never left highsec*.
So far, it's kind of amusing. I feel safer in a region* where there is no NPC law*. Joining a big corp is doubtless the reason. When I'm ratting* or mining, I'm surrounded by corp-mates, and there is a standing fleet keeping an eye out for intruders*.

*Brave: A player owned corporation. Like a guild in other MMOGs.
* nullsec: a region of space where there is no NPC guardians.
* highsec: regions of space where NPC guardians will attack players who get rowdy and try to destroy other players.
* region: parts of the Eve galaxy that include a set of solar systems adjacent to each other.
* NPC law: Concord is the computer controlled NPC guardians who are nigh-unkillable and will attack players who attack others, or who have gotten their reputation so low they are kill on sight by Concord.
* ratting: Hunting and destroying NPC pirates for bounties and loot.
* intruders: nullsec territory can be attacked and taken over by other players.

I'm having fun, though I'm so broke IRL I'm unable to pay for the subscription and am limited in how high my skills and available tech and ships can go.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

In around 25 hours I'm going to be going into a listless, death-like state as I hole up and play Persona 3: Reload.

I am currently playing the Sunrider series. Right now I'm on Sunrider: Liberation Day.

I've been playing No Man's Sky for the last month or so.

Yes, I heard all about the problems back in the day. But in 2024, the game is pretty well fleshed out, and I've enjoyed it so far.

The basic functionality of running around exploring planets and making money is pretty solid. I've run into one or two minor bugs, but nothing that prevented me from doing what I was trying to do.

The procedurally generated planets, creatures and flora all work pretty well. IMHO, they have hit a good balance between having different places look different, without having to reinvent the game everywhere you go. The underlying mechanics work everywhere.

The major flaw is an underlying lack of personality. NPCs are generally shallow. You're going to play this game for the gameplay, not the characters you meet or a compelling story arc.

You can pick up the game for $30, and at that price it's a good deal, even if you just explore around trying out the game options. The basic game is compelling and fun.

Picked up Enshrouded and I'm enjoying it so far.  My son and his friends are playing it, but I doing the solo thing to get into the slowly unfolding lore and 'get gud' before I do any co-op play.  If you like the fantasy survival game and don't mind a early access build, it is fun stuff.

Now that it's got the official license, City of Heroes: Homecoming has dropped a sizable update with new powers, new story arcs, new costume parts and a revamp/update of what they're referring to as the "New Player Experience" (basically making it easier for new players to get onboard).

So, I'll probably be spending the next month just playing with all the new options.

Been playing a lot of Cosomoteer lately, enjoying the ship/puzzle building/design grind it offers.
