I've started with Sal the Gunzerker and I've just killed Captain Flynt. But since I mostly play as a sniper (Gunzerking with two pistols when rushed or facing a big bad), I wonder whether I should be playing Zero the Assassin instead.

Just finished Tiny Thief: a nice point-and-click puzzle games, that my baby girl loved. A cute medieval thief has to solve several puzzles to remedy some injustices and save the kingdom. Great to play with your kids.

Don't get me wrong, I agree it's a nice contrast, it just doesn't work for me.

(For reference, the only videogames I've really found funny are Conker's Bad Fur Day, Portal, and Portal 2.)

The gameplay was intentionally designed to be "not fun". There's a lot of interesting commentary about the game, but don't look into it until after you're done.

Those people who said it was akin to Diablo weren't kidding.  It IS a helluva lot like Diablo, but more fun.  Probably because it's Marvel Heroes, not Blizzard grimdark.

And those cutscenes are great.

I don't see it holding my attention for very long stretches of time, but it will be a great filler game.

Considering the Diablo franchise's main problem was the story depth (compared to the competition of Baldur's Gate), I'm often amused by how seriously Blizzard takes themselves with Diablo.

They certainly don't have that issue of being too serious with WoW. (Although I wish they did, because it would mean less "WTF??" moments in a storyline, like going from faux-medieval environment in Vanilla through Wrath to an epic Apocalypse Now moment in the Alliance intro Mists questline a few short game years later.)

New release of Dwarf Fortress is consuming all my video gaming time. The world continues to progress after generation now. Armies roam the map, bandits will actually rob you, combat isn't necessarily lethal, things can be climbed now, weapons can be sheathed, conversations have been revamped, sites can now be conquered, dead birds rain from the sky, so much new stuff.

Adventure mode honestly feels a lot different in a good way. Haven't tried fort mode yet.

I mostly agree with your assessment

Diablo III is such a huge wasted opportunity. Fun gameplay, horrid fluff. I mean, the basic idea is okay, but the implementation is awful and the dialogues makes me cringe.

WoW has always been moderately silly, but again, since Cataclysm its humorous moments, like everything else about it, seem to be getting increasingly dumb.

So many games nowadays are ruined by absolutly needless fluff. Diablo 3 would have been just fine with no explicit story at all IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I don't need story to enjoy a videogame. But I like having it around.

I don't even expect it to be particularly good. I mean, I think WoW's (pré-Cataclysm anyway) is as good as, I don't know, your average Saturday morning cartoon or the sillier Star Trek episodes. It's not haute literature and it doesn't have to be. It's entertaining and that's all it has to be. Hell, I found even the much-maligned Neverwinter Nights original campaign somewhat entertaining.

Diablo 3's is not even that. It brings to mind a particularly crap grimdark comic or anime. It flies at the speed of light through So Bad It's Good territory and straight into So Bad It's Horrible.

Blizz has mastered the art of the trailer, where the trailer is the most interesting part of the story. I suspected they did it for D3 --and I think you confirmed that-- but I knew that they'd jumped the shark with Cata and Mists. And with Warlords on the horizon and it's "alternate universe" comic book crap, it's gone well off the rails.
