Having been "busy" with the Borderlands series and now Skyrim in the past few months, my wife and I logged into World of Warcraft for the first time in a while, yesterday.
I have a level 90 Undead Warlock in the Warlords of Draenor starting area; started it with the wife (and her level 90 Undead Hunter) but we ended up abandoning it in favor of Borderlands 2. Besides, she isn't terribly interested into playing a Hunter anymore, while I definitely think of the Warlock as "my main."
I have a level 88 Orc Warrior lost somewhere in Pandaria along with her level 88 Orc Shaman. Here the situation is reversed as she loves her Shaman and I'm lukewarm on the Warrior (tanking PUGs as a Warrior didn't work for me, I swear I had a better time as a Guardian Druid). She wants to level her Shaman and I keep up with her as I drag my feet through the least interesting expansion with a character I'm not crazy about. Ah well.
We have yet to use our "start a character at level 90" tokens and we're debating which classes to play. Probably using them over at another server where a friend is in a casual-friendly guild.
Last, but not least, I visited a couple of low-level characters from my "altitis" period on another server; a Draenei Paladin and a Human Mage. I took them out for a spin but couldn't for the life of me remember their rotations, their professions, anything. I deleted one and I'm inclined to delete the other.
The truth of the matter is that the most enjoyable element of WoW, to me, has always been exploring the world in its expansive glory, basking in the gonzo worldbuilding and the ham-handed overarching plot. It's been with me for a while (a short time in 2007, and now since 2010) and for a couple of years it was my go-to PC game.
The endgame, PvP or PvE, never held much fascination for me. Leveling up characters, clearing lowbie quest chains and the odd dungeon (hoping for a good PUG — these seem easier to find at lower levels), racking up exploration achievements, this was what I enjoyed best.
I'll probably assist the missus in leveling up her Shaman, and then we'll play the Draenor content (looking forward to the garrison endgame, for the resonance with the classic D&D stronghold minigame so near and dear to my heart). And in the meantime I just might level an alt. You know. For old times' sake.
