A week or two ago an Italian publisher announced that they planned to publish a 25th anniversary version of the fantasy board game HeroQuest, one of the few dungeoncrawler board games to need a DM.

Funny thing is... They dont have permission. They are citing Italian licensing laws that apparently allow them to pull this off.

Will be interesting if GW or Hasbro take notice or any action. So far seems not. But GW is unpredictable and their stake in HQ is low at this point. Which has never stopped them before.

I still have my original copy of HeroQuest. One of the few collaborations between Milton Bradley and Games Workshop. Battle Nasters was another one. Fun game. Distills into a board game the baser feel of how an RPG works without being an RPG. And lots of minis adaptable to actual fantasy tabletop RPGs.

Interesting. HQ is still awesome. I think a "spiritual successor" would be a better approach though, to avoid legal issues.

As an aside, IME most dungeoncrawler board games have a DM or monster player.

From the looks of it the new version will be retooled, new minis, possibly new board. Not sure on the rules. The more they change the more dubious it gets. So far news has been scant.

Aside from HeroQuest and Mutant Chronicles Sieve of the Citadel, I dont have any crawlers note seen any crawlers that need a GM/monster player. Though I know Descent needs a GM/monster player.

The Ravenloft/Ashardalon/Drizzt set doesnt, Dungeon! doesnt, Warhammer Quest doesnt... At some point there was a switch to co-op play. Or at least a swing that way.

Heck, the Buffy board game even has a monster player.

Yeah, I would say its dependent on what you have played. But IME (which I would consider pretty extensive in this area) dungeon crawlers with GMs are more common.

Anyway, not to thread jack away from HQ :) Do you have a link to the announcements?

Well, the HeroQuest trademark expired and was taken up by Issaries Inc for its HeroQuest game, so calling it HeroQuest might be an issue. As for copyright over the rules, that might be a problem.

Would GW care? They dropped HeroQuest years ago.

So, who owns the Spanish Trademark, then? Does Spain have its own Trademarks or are they EU-controlled?

Unless they just want a HeroQuest in Spanish for the Spanish market, they would probably also do an English-language version. If they wanted to sell it in the US or in Europe, would they need to look at those Trademarks?

IANAL, but I could see problems ahead.

I just wanted to post a reply to the thread and inadvertently quoted your post. I only have read in an Italian forum someone's post saying that Gamezone has the rights for publishing HQ in Spain.

Quote from: http://www.purplepawn.com/2013/09/heroquest-25th-anniversary-edition-en-espanol/A deluxe 25th Anniversary edition of HeroQuest, to be released in 2014, was announced by representatives of Gamezone Miniatures, a Spanish company that primarily makes wargaming miniatures. Plans for the game components include dual-sided modular boards and resin miniatures for four heroes (male and female variations), monsters in different poses, and terrain features. Although licensing issues with the HeroQuest brand name preventing Gamezone from distributing the game outside Spain, the company is planning on releasing the game in multiple languages. Gamezone is considering crowdsourcing the funding for this new edition. - See more at: http://www.purplepawn.com/2013/09/heroquest-25th-anniversary-edition-en-espanol/#sthash.jm3H5moz.dpuf

These guys look like a "GW mini replacement" publisher, so I'm sure the GW IP lawyers would like to see them drowning in their own blood if they could manage it.

Theres lots of those. GWs days of "The best sculpts ever! ended in the late 90s and theyve been getting trounced by vastly superior sculpts ever since. If one ever gets to a full production level at realistic prices instead of insane gouging then things may get very interesting very fast.

Privateer is gradually gaining momentum. While at the same time screwing up in the damnest ways. Crocodile is still plodding along. Just hasnt gained momentum yet. Probably a few others out there. I got out of wargames so whats current Im not up on.
