This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Suggest a Roman gladiator board game
« on: April 17, 2012, 08:46:11 AM »
I am looking for a solid Roman Gladiator board game that is fun on its own but also has a good enough board and figures that i can use it for regular rpgs. Most of the arena games i have played (except maybe the original ircus maximus) have been too absract or euro. So looking for something staight forward where i move my gladiator around the arena and fight (preferably minimal or no cards). Been out of the board game market for a while so hoping someone here as a suggestion.

I am guesisng this is as a prop/aid for your Roman games ?

You might as well just knock up your own game using some minis -

I was going to suggest Munera, but that's about ruling a training familia rather then gladiators themselves.
Furthermore, I consider that  This is Why We Don't Like You thread should be closed

Wait for Gladiators

If you're willing to wait until early next year, you could get Gladiators:

www.GladiatorsGame.ca

It does indeed have cards, but it also has a "Quick Match" mode that's played without cards. It was at the last PAX East and the last Gen Con; it's a lot of fun.

"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"

That's what I get for having watched Airplane the past weekend.

I was in a game store the other day and saw a game called SPARTICUS. I don't recall the company producing the game, but it looked kind of neat and similar to what you describe.

You could probably use Siege/Cry Havoc, but there aren't any specifically Roman sets as far as I know.  Cry Havoc Fan sells the maps, counters and rules from remainders when the original company closed down; no boxed sets.  There are also downloads available, but I am not entirely sure about the legality of those.  They make no mention of owning the rights nor that the rights have reverted to the public domain.

MVNERA is actually pretty neat and features a combat system extremely detailed by euro boardgame standards :D and there is a little bit of character development. It doesn't have much in the way of reusable components though.

Probably this one: http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/128671/spartacus-a-game-of-blood-treachery I have not played it but apparently it is decent even if the large board is a bit redundant.

Gladiator Board Game

Have you tried Chains to Champions?  It was just released in March 2013.  It is a really fun game where you get to purchase a gladiator, then equip him with various weapons, armor and helmets and then fight to the death in an arena that is surrounded by deadly spikes.  It comes with training dummies as pawns but I use Lego minifigs which all the accessories are made to fit.  You can strategically create really interesting combinations.  It's most fun with a group of people because then you can make alliances, and break them.  In the first part you can bribe the auctioneer, in the second part you have 7 days to get training and equipment or can choose to work for more money.  I have played it a lot and never made the same gladiator twice.  It is made by a company called Brickwarriors.  Hope this is what you were looking for.
