Title: Rangers of Shadow Deep
Post by: Greentongue on April 23, 2020, 01:31:42 PM
Anyone playing it?

Using physical miniatures or something like Tabletop Simulator?
Been worth the investment?

I haven't played Rangers yet, but I've been looking at it, Ghost Archipelago, and Frostgrave.  I don't have a whole lot in the way of minis, terrain etc., but my 5yo son and I like to play fantasy miniature skirmish games with what I've got.  From what I've read and the videos I've watched, the rules seem pretty straightforward.  Bookkeeping is light enough that I can handle it all myself until he gets a little older and can get more into that aspect of the game.

What about you?  Have you played Rangers yet?  How does it stack up to the others in terms of mechanics?  I like the idea of it being solo and co-op friendly, but since my son always wants to play the orcs and other monsters he might not be into it as much.

It reminds me a Lot of back when I originally played Original D&D. We used henchmen so it's very familiar.

Sounds like your son would like Frostgrave more at this point and run an "evil" wizard against you. Just focus on Grab The Loot! and not killing each other.

Truthfully, I been distracted with collecting all the terrain and miniature available in Tabletop Simulator and not played as many games as I could.
Luckily there is time for both and as I get more than I can use, I will game more.

Thanks for the info.  As a big fan of OD&D, I'm even more intrigued now!

When we're choosing minis for our skirmishes, my son doesn't really go for magic-using types (see Exhibit A (https://stoneflesh.wordpress.com/2020/01/27/rise-of-the-fledgling-dungeon-master/)) -- he'd probably have a lot of fun playing GA with an ogre or minotaur Heritor and crew of orcs.  I just need to find an appropriate Warden figure for that crew and he'll be all set.

Well, you can always grab Frostgrave and give it a try.  Rangers is related so if you like it chances are ...

Frostgrave is Free!!! (http://therenaissancetroll.blogspot.com/2020/03/frostgrave-is-free.html)

While focused on Wizard battles, it doesn't have to be.
