Title: Prince of Persia
Post by: Seanchai on February 28, 2009, 10:15:07 AM
I finished up the new Prince of Persia this week. I enjoyed the game. If you're looking for a challenge, this is not the game for you. You can't die and the hardest parts of the game just aren't that hard.

I will say I'm not thrilled with the ending. I don't know how to create a blacked out spoiler so I won't say why, but, while cinematic, I don't like it's results.

I enjoyed it, although I was drawn away around halfway through by Fallout 3. Whilst I found it both visually arresting and sweepingly cinematic the challenge level was so low that most of the time I felt as though I was just going through the motions, which isn't an attractive feature in an action adventure.

On a related note I'm interested in seeing which version of the Prince the movie delivers. I'd love to see the sly and humorous Sands of Time character, but have a feeling we'll end up with the gloomy and angst-ridden Warrior Within.

I loved the game. Yeah, it's not so dificult but there are many challenges (in Xbox version at least) that you can try to spice it up. The story is compelling, and I liked the ending. It clearly sets upthe new sequel but I see nothing wrong with that as long the sequel is good.

Re: the movie. The new game got back the humour and charm of Sands of Time. I hope the emo angsty doesn't make it. Do we know somethign more about the movie (cast, director...)?

Jake Gylenhaal plays the Prince:

Cool. Well, at least he looks a bit like the character. But one of Imperator's Laws of Movies says:

'Nothing good can come from a movie based on videogame.'

So, we'll see.

Historically this would seem to be the case, although I'm a big fan of the Silent Hill movie, warts and all.

What did you think of the version Prince of Persia II?  How did that one compare to the others?

Oh, yes! It definitely had its share of problems but they nailed the visuals and atmosphere.

I think it's one of those movies that works better when dubbed into a language you can't understand.

Movie has potential, but I won't hold my breath. Haven't played the games in ages, I do remember them though.

As for video games made into movies, I enjoyed both Tomb Raider movies (Rimmer as the butler if nothing else), the Resident Evils (ok most of those) and the Sakura Wars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiXBqny-1qw)* movie (sample clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JA1PgoiAc2A)). Not seen Silent Hill but I will eventually.

* I mean how can you botch a movie about a team of all singing all dancing girls who fight monsters From Beyond in their steampunk stompybots + one token hapless boy with no stompybot? Maybe the Videogame Movies Suck rule applies only to US films?
