The version I was taught goes somethign like this...
A blind man goes on a sea voyage, and is shipwrecked with several survivors. Soon, desperation sets in, and they are forced into cannibalism. To spare the blind fellow the guilt of the ordeal, they tell him that he's eating albatross. Later, after they are rescued, he goes to a restaurant and orders albatross soup, since he had actually enjoyed the taste of albatross when shipwrecked on the island. But it doesn't taste the same... The realization dawns on him, and he kills himself from the guilt that his fellow survivors had intended on sparing him from.
