Hey,

Anyone out here playing Battlefield 2?  I just got it for a song (free actually with pre-order from GameStop for new Medal of Honor game, $5 if you cancel our pre-order...i.e. you don't get your $5 deposit back) and fired it up...pretty cool.

A few questions from a newb:

1.  What's the deal with ranked servers?  How do I sign up for ranking, or attach my EA account so it gets rank points (or whatever?)
2.  Anyone out here playing/running a server?
3.  Which (if any) add-on's good/necessary?

1) Ranked servers are tracked by EA. You earn "points" (xp) that get you a rank which unlocks weapons. You can earn various medals which multiply points the you get in a particular battle. The most common of which are gold, silver, and bronze stars for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in battle. If you can log on then you should be ready to go to be ranked.

3) Special Forces is nice but requires an exit and a reboot to switch from regular BF2. Armored Fury and the Euro expansion add maps and are nice to have. There has been two maps added to the base pack since release, Jalahabad and Highway Tampa.

For the base package an interesting mode is infantry only where there are no vehicles. The same map, using infantry only, plays very differently.

Smaller servers seem more useful for racking up points for the novice. 64 man server are exciting but the shit is flying everywhere and even careful play will get you killed.

I just pick any that comes up. Generally only run into weird servers down in the 20 and below ranges. The 32 to 64 man servers are all run pretty straight from what I can tell. The main differences in manners/rules seems to be whether you can camp a base or not. Most allow it, some make it a bannable offense.
