Title: [Nintendo] Uh oh, I just had an idea...
Post by: KrakaJak on November 13, 2006, 02:20:18 PM

What if the Wii is going to have a similar lifespan as Nintendo's portable systems?

Hear me out.

The game boy advance came out. The screen was shitty but the games were good, plus it was cheaper than the competition (NGPC) and played old Gameboy games. Then 1.5 years later The GBA SP came out. Smaller, more lightweight, light up screen, Etc.

After that we got the GB Micro, which was a tiny version of the GBA, and the DS, which played advance games and DS games. Than, about a year later we have the current DS Lite. A slightly improved version of the DS.

So, now we got the Gamecube. It's no big secret that the Wii is an upgraded version of GC hardware. Hence the full backward compatibility with GC games. What if, in say 1.5 years, they put out the upgraded version of the Wii. Say a Wii the size of an iPod or a Wii built into a TV, or a Wii that plays MP3's. It's still just as functional as the Wii I'm buying on Sunday, but it's "cooler" or More convenient.

I'll bet dollars that Nintendo is working on a Current-Gen Wii Followup as we speak. A "new" Wii with a bigger flash drive and some other nick-knacks for us to buy in a couple summers from now.

knowing that the Wii is compatible with the GC games, has just swayed my opinion slightly.

having a 4 year old daughter she might just go for the physical action side of the console

I don't see a real problem with new versions, KrakaJak.

As to the article, does anyone in the US really use a game console to watch DVDs nowadays? A case could be made about DVDs allowing for bigger games, but that's it.

I use my PS2, it is my first and only DVD player.

It' just they are going to sell us this system ove and over again, like perhaps making a Wii+ that can play GC, Wii and Wii+ games, but instead of releasing it 5 years from now, they're going to release it in two.

Then a year later comes the slimline version of that system, than a year later comes the one with retinal scanner than a year later...

Seems like a lot of useless speculation to me.

As an aside, Wii discs are already essentially DVDs, with all associated storage capacity and such.  The launch Wii just doesn't play DVD movies.

Here's the thing though, Nintendo rarely FORCES folks to upgrade. That's the genius of what they do.

Like all those iterations of the game boy, I believe all of them played the same games. So if you didnt WANT to upgrade, you didnt have to in order to play the new GB games.

What Nintendo does, and does well, is convince people who bought their hardware that they WANT the upgrade.

Sure they do.  They do it the same way everyone else does.  They move their high profile games to the next system.

Things like the original GBA to the GBA-SP to the Game Boy Micro are just like what console makers have been doing for years, changing the look of the product as it goes through it's lifespan.  Atari did it with the 2600 (6 switch, 4 switch, and Jr models).  Sega did it with the Genesis (original, model 2, and a tiny model 3).  Sony has done it with both Playstations.  Nintendo has done it before with their big systems too (toaster NES to top loading NES, and original SNES to SNES2).

Dude, if you'd played the original GBA . . . .

Trust me, the SP essentially was a forced upgrade, because you sure as hell couldn't play anything on the original's screen.

Right, but the cartridges still worked in the old GBA.

In other words, they made you WANT to upgrade. It's not the same situation as, say, the PS2 to the PS3, where if you want to play Final Fantasy XIII, there's no choice. It's a PS3 game.

Kinda like how I couldn't play my NES games on the SNES, or my SNES games on my 64, or my 64 games on the GameCube?  And how in order to play those games on the Wii I have to wait for them to be released on VC and buy them all over again?
