This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Playstation 3 games?

Crossposted at rpg.net:

OK, so I did something utterly stupid. I bought a first generation Playstation 3. I didn't want to. I told myself I wouldn't. But I was standing in electronics at K-Mart of all places and an employee wheeled up an entire cart of 360s and PS3's. It wasn't until I was driving away from the store that I stopped and said "what the f**k did you just do?"

So, now that I've got one, what games are good? My tastes are fairly limited---Silent Hill, Residental Evil, GTA, Twisted Metal, and SW Battlefront are the only games I play regularly (and unfortunately, these days regularly means once a week if I'm lucky---another reason I had told myself I wasn't buying a PS3).

I don't like FF, but I wouldn't mind playing a good "traditional" fantasy game. I'm too old and crotchety for anything that involves linking to the web. I don't like 1st person shooters. I like to see my guy running around. That said, I'm not entirely against them if it's for a genre I like, say Star Wars or WWII.

So, what's out there? (strictly for the PS3)

Well, the bad news is that there really isn't much for the PS3 yet.  Much like the 360, it didn't launch with anything really appealling.

Resistance has been getting a lot of hype and is a system exclusive.

If the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game is anything like it's 360 counterpart, I can tell you that it's definitely worth plopping the $60 on if you don't have it for the 360 already.

Otherwise, I'm just kind of waiting until Tekken 6 comes out or the Koei Dynasty Warriors type title set in Europe.

Well, if you're first-wave PS3 lasts that long, 2008 oughtta be a good year for you.  I wouldn't expect RE5 until then, and though Rockstar claims that they'll have the new GTA out in '07, there's a lot of speculation that they might not make it due to their plans to release regular episodic content vs. thier perfectionist habits.  Oh, and it's not a Playstation exclusive at launch, anymore.

On the up-side, you might be able to download some of those classic favs of your online from Sony.  You know, if the system wasn't backwards compatible already.

If you want to blow $8 on a download, Blast Factor is pretty cool.

Yeah, Resistance and MUA are really the only good games on the PS3 at the moment.  It'll be a while before the big system selling games come out (that is if all the supposed system exclusive games stay that way).  I guess you can always play your PS2 games on it.

I'd recommend staying very far away from the Cash, Guns, Chaos game.  Blast Factor is a much better omni-shooter.

Q*Bert is a good download, and a must for anyone who loves the classic game.  My only complaint is that you have to use the left analog stick for control.*  I'd prefer to use the D-Pad.  Optionally, you can use the tilt feature of the controller instead, but the game is more or less unplayable that way.

Still waiting on Tekken: Dark Resurrection.

*Edit: Just wanted to mention that I was wrong.  For some reason the D-Pad didn't work the first day I had the game.  Then someone informed me that it should work and I tried again.  Suddenly, the game was controllable with the D-Pad.  I don't know what was wrong, but the D-Pad CAN be used to control Q-Bert.  Sorry for accidentally fibbing.

FYI I went with Call of Duty and it was fun enough.  A couple of glitches forced me to restart the game, but otherwise it was pretty smooth.  My biggest gripe is how short the damn thing was.  Maybe I'm missing something, but at least I know when I drop $50 for a GTA game I'll be playing it for WEEKS instead of days (at my schedule).  So, why hasn't everyone else caught on to Rockstar's "open playground" style levels?  Could you imagine a WW2 special forces guy trapped behind the lines, still trying to complete his missions, but also with the freedom to move around the countryside and get into trouble?  Another thing I'd love to see is a WWII Battlefront clone.  How cool would that be?

Hee hee hee.

There is a game like that.  It's called Battlefield 1942, it's been on the PC for years, and Battlefront was actually a clone of it.

And sandbox games aren't common because they take a lot of work.
