I'm in the mood to buy a Mythos boardgame, maybe even more than one. Looking for some reccomendations.

Arkham Horror: Played it once. Reasonably fun, but way too long. I will never play it again since I discovered...

Elder Sign: More fun that AH and shorter. This is probably the one I will get. How are the expansions?

Arkham Horror: The Card Game: Never played it, but I have played the LOTR card game. How does it compare to that? How does it compare to ES? It looks gorgeous.

Pandemic Cthulu: Own it, haven't played it yet. Any fun?

Mountains of Madness: Looks impressive, but the $80 (Amazon) price is a bit off-putting. Thoughts?

Any other good ones not on the list?

Cthulhu Wars - it looks gorgeous, got great reviews, but I haven't played it yet.

I am also very interested in people's thoughts on Elder Sign.

Elder sign is a playable game.  Arkham horror I have never made it through.

The fact the we started with 3 expansions added to the base set didn't help.

I love Arkham Horror and locally the players prefer looooong games. One very very common mistake people make is that they assume their first game is an indicator of how long it is. From experience the first play of about any game tends to take twice as as later plays when you have gotten the hang of it and are not looking up rules as often. Though one problem is that AH's rulebook is a bit obtuse at times.

Other Mythos board games.

Mansions of Madness: This is a great Lovecraft themed mansion-crawler.

Arkham Investigators: A free PNP solo game that is is a nice little mystery to solve. Unfortunately it ended after one expansion and went to a board game sold in store.

Arkham Express: A free PNP game that condenses AH down into in express style game.

Theres a couple of others.

Mythos: the CCG from Chaosium. Great game. Playable solo even. OOP though.

Eldritch Horror: the FFG replacement for AH. Shifts the action from city scale to world scale. Personally it just doesnt have the same vitality of AH.

1996! A blast from the past. Looks like a fun game, but the age and collectability factor might pose some difficulty.

Looks sort-of Risk-like. Those minis though-- amazing. Gives me nightmares looking at some of them!

Just learned (from the Wikipedia page) that Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game "shares art and characters with FFG's other Cthulhu Mythos products Arkham Horror and Elder Sign."

You can get starters on e-bay or BGG sometimes for around 20$. If going that route aim for the 2-player starter sets.

And while not specifically mythos related, there is also the board game Shadows of Brimstone. It is effectively Boot Hill meets Call of Cthulhu.

My family and I have a blast with this when we have Board Game Night. We've also played the original Pandemic and enjoy it, but there's something special about fighting cultists, closing gates, accidently releasing Mythos creatures and so on. Took us a few tries before we won the game and a decent percentage of tries have led to total failure. (We had one game where we realized at the end that if we had one more player turn we would have won, but sadly the world ended just a little too quickly.) One of our favorite games because of its quick set-up, ease of understanding the rules, and replay-ability. We often play a couple of games in a sitting.

In my opinion, Elder Sign is probably the best out of the 'Arkham Horror' style games that FFG puts out. It's quick, it's fun, it supports up to 8 players. As I like to describe it to people who've played Arkham Horror: "Elder Sign is like Arkham Horror; except you can get a game done in the same time it takes to set up Arkham Horror." Highly recommend it.

My copy just arrived! To anyone interested in buying the game, make sure to get the Revised edition, which changes 3 of the investigator cards and has more examples in the rulebook.

I found Eldritch Horror superior to Arkham Horror. It takes a long time, but I don't seem to get the problems that I had with Arkham Horror (e.g. the only person capable of taking on a Shoggoth would go mad before he had a chance to hurt it). I must try Elder Sign ...

I play EH about once a month or so with experienced players on a huge table. We block out an entire afternoon, and always have a great time, win or lose. It's slow, but so amazingly thematic, we take the time to luxuriate in the game, and I think that is the sweet spot - don't rush it.

It's a bit out of date, but here's an extensive list of other Mythos boardgames that are out there.
