This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: kanegrundarI started a character on AO last night.  This game has gone through a LOT of change since I last played it back in '02.  While the server stability is a little lacking and the interface is clunky, I'm enjoying it so far.  I'm going to give it a couple months before deciding if I want to buy the expansions and start paying a monthly fee for it.

If you don't decide to pay don't forget to cancel your account as the free trial stops being free after something like a year and then you are charged.

Anyone else think a GTA MMO would be fun?
Just a thought.

No worries there.  It got cancelled once I finally got tired of playing it in lieu of City of Heroes/Villains

WoW is by and large, the king of my MMO world.

I enjoyed Silkroad Online for a bit, but the lag and wierd control glitches get really annoying.

CoH basically loses novelty past the character creator.  It's not horrid, but I've never been able to muster the energy to go past lvl12 or so.

I rather enjoyed the demo of Saga of Ryzom, and am considering nabbing a sub for that when I have the cash.  I like the approach to characters and being able to build your own spells and things.

EVE Online was pretty cool from what I played of it.  I'm a sucker for a nice relaxing space sim like that, and it's really damn pretty too.

Enjoyed Jumpgate as well.  It's a very small community, but everyone's incredibly friendly and helpful, and the realistic space physics are actually really damn fun once you get the hang of how it works.  The kind of freaky maneuvers you can pull off in zero-g piloting are just sweet as all hell.

I will probably renew Eve in the new year.

I'm not as up on these as you guys are, what are:

Vanguard
Jumpgate
Tabula Rasa
Huxley

I will likely try a trial of WoW next year, but I didn't enjoy Warcraft 3 so that put me off a bit.

Pirates of the Burning Sea I am keen to check out, if I got the name right, the one John Tynes is working on.  The Roman one and the Conan one I will check reviews of but probably not get into.

Vanguard is a new MMO from Brad McQuad, one of the old EQ/SOE guys, and from what I've read of it, it's essentially being designed to cater to the hardcore catasser crowd from EQ, the sorts of people who firmly believe that a game is shit if it doesn't take you hours and hours just to get one level.

Jumpgate is a space sim/MMO.  You play a trader/mercenary, taking frieght between stations and fighting strange squid aliens in a system that has been destroyed by a big disaster.  In theory there's also some faction vs. faction PvP, but in practice everyone who wants to do any fighting gets that out of their system with some friendly competition in the training grounds.

Tabula Rasa is a sci-fi-themed online action game, from Lord British's new company.  At this point, I'm starting to think the game is nothing more than vaporware, as it's been a number of years of devtime now, and so far all they have to show of it are some rather unimpressive shots of corridors.  Even the outdoor shots are more like hallways.

WOW is it for me.  I have my main on Shadowsong and alts on Kirin Tor.  I dig the five-man instances and Alterac Valley, as I've not gotten to raid yet.  WOW has given me new perspectives on gaming, and confirmed something I've long suspected (Most gamers really don't want to roleplay; they just want to game.), so it's been good for my TRPG gameplay also.

There are the E3 2006 gameplay movies up on the website at the moment, they are hardly what you call unimpressive shots of corridors.

Another plug for "The Damnation Army", a villain group on the Infinity server of City of Villains.  It feels like I'm the only one playing in it now and we've just got the base to a state were it's actually useful

I've been enjoying City of Heroes/Villains since May.  Getting a little tire of it but I just...can't...walk away.  If it were based on anything else than superheroes, I could probably leave, but the bastards know my weakness.

I played Guild Wars from the World Preview Event until about a month after Factions was released.  Just totally couldn't care less about that game anymore.

EvE was fun, but the corp I was in made the game more like a job that a game and took everything too damned serious.  When I first tried PvP, I got bitched out on TS.  Take it easy fellas, shit...

As a Trekie, I'm looking forward to the Star Trek Online if it EVER comes out.  Ditto on Age of Conan : Hyborian Adventures.  I'm going to have to search for those free Ragnarok servers previously mentioned, I've been interested in that game for a while...

MMOs are Serious Business, yo!

Any pursuit that requires organizing more than a couple of people to do it quickly ceases to resemble a fun pastime and instead begins to resemble a serious occupation, no matter what that pursuit may be, which is why MMOs have all of the problems that are now known qualities with regard to guilds and other such entities.

If you're looking for a Villain Group, particularly on Infinity, drop me a PM

Currently I am drooling over Vanguard and Auto Assualt is looking very nice.

As someone who was on the closed Beta Test of Auto Assualt I have to see that it is really good.

I am not playing it right now, but I may go back to playing it really soon.   I had a great deal of fun during the beta and the violence is sick.
